My buddy just lifted his 83 about 2.5 to 3" and his front drive shaft would not even reach together. the rear you should be able to get a few more inches out of.

Actually after some more thought i know for a fact they run different rear driveshaft set up on the extra cabs, they put in a carrier bearing to bring the shaft back further up near the body before coming down hence lowering the distance it travels.

As for front shafts they may have switched to a longer one between 83 and 84, all i know is my 85 has a longer front driveshaft than the 83. haha, hmm that wasn't much help, but sounds like you can fit 4" though

A lot depends on the type of lift spring. When I put on an off the shelf 3.5" lift spring, I had no issues with drive shaft length. But when I reworked the springs for more flex and especially when I moved the front axle forward about 3/4", I had to get the front shaft lengthened. A drive shaft spacer is always an option if you need to make the shaft just a little longer:

Not all extra cabs have the carrier bearing some just have a regular 1 piece shaft.

I have a 4" pro comp lift and I have no issues, but like Crawler said if I was to move my axle forward things would be different.
