how hard is switching to an elocker axle rear..

i can purchase a rear axle with abs and 4.10 gears with the locker... from a 1998 w 3.4 from what i can see for 750cnd... would this be easiyer or would it be worth saving money to mod my diff??

i just finished the modification for the swap, got it all back together a couple of weeks ago, and wired today.

honeslty, this is a 5/5 for home mechanics. just getting the axle out is a pain. i dont know your skill level, but you need to be pretty handy with a die grinder and a welder, not to mention great at drilling and tapping perfect holes. that was by far the most difficult part of this mod.

if i was to do a swap again, i would swap whole axles. i say it is worth the extra cost if you are not VERY comfortable welding and grinding.

however, i am not positive that this axle will be a direct bolt up axle for you, as im not sure if any thing changed from 2nd to 3rd generation interms of the rear axle (im positive there are changes, not sure if they matter in this case)

your only option maybe to modify your existing housing. others should be able to chime in on that.

96 and up axles are different.

Probably not undoable, but also probably not very practical seeing as most mod the 86-95 housings.

That axle is wider than yours, your rear axle width is 58.5" while the '98 is 60". I Guess you could just get wheel spacers.... or just grab the 3rd with the locker and all the wiring and mod your current 3rd to fit.

An ARB is a different kind of hard. For 200 bucks, it could be someone elses problem. You drop your third, bring it to a shop, and go pick it up when you're ready. As for DIY, check here:

It took me about 13 hours, and I knew what I was doing.

Yeah, it will cost. A fair bit more than an elocker too. The e locker is a great option, but it does require modification. The ARB's are WAY easier to install if you have them pre set up, but they are more expensive. Trade offs both ways.

if youve already got spare diffs, go for dual arbs. regear while youre at it..might as well. might be cost effective to get it all done at one shop. isnt there a national 4wd or something out there?

if they can do the setup on gears, then yes. they should be able to.
