How fast can I go with rear diff locked?

I have an '04 Tacoma 2WD. The OE sticker states "Do not exceed 5mph while rear differential is locked". That doesn't make sense to me, as if one is in snow, on the road, one would have to exceed that speed. Anyone know why they specify that speed?

this really isn't the right forum for this there buddy. But I would expect the sticker to state that you don't want to engage the locker in any speed faster than 5 MPH. Not that you can't go faster than 5 mph while its engaged.

unless you disable that stuff so you can lock it in 2wd at low speed 5mph or less and drive as fast as you want like any other locker

With all due respect,... the sticker plainly states "Do not exceed 5mph while in locked position"..... I know my old Chev could be shifted in 4WD-high, while in motion with no problem.... So, I just wonder why there is a restriction on speed?

will computer let you go faster than 5 mph? And I don't have a toyota that has the TRD locker factory, so I don't know what sticker you were talking about. Didn't mean to dis-respect. Mechanically there is nothing wrong with going faster than 5mph. I go way faster than that all the time with my lockers engaged...

yes this confuses me as well... i am assuming this but I figure that there was a translation issue when converting to English because what I thought to myself was that they didnt want the vehicle to travel faster than five miles per hour while the lockers are engaged which is just dumb. I think the other guy is right... they meant do not engage that the vehicle should not be going faster than five miles per hour while setting the lockers on.

Why would you wanna use the locker on the road anyway? Honestly... If your on a snowy road, and u lock the rear in in 2wd, your gonna fishtail like crazy... and if your just gonna put it in 4wd, then you dont need the locker anyway.... Now if your talking about goin 10-15 mph down the trail or logging road, then go nuts, but IIRC the ecu in those rigs wont allow the locker to actuate if your going over 5mph... not that u cant go over 5 with it engaged... just that it wont engage over 5mph....

There is a procedure for engaging the rear elocker in your owners manual and I believe on visor.

Do not engage it going over 5 mph. You can run it only in 4L with the factory wiring unless you do the grey wire mod to make it activate in 4H or 2H.

If you think about it you don't want to suddenly lock the rear axle with the rear shafts spinning, thus the 5 mph warning. Driving over 5 mph with the rear locker engaged with the grey wire mod is done all the time.

He has a 2WD.

I run E-lockers front and rear in my 1981 and engage/disengage them all the time on the trail regardless of my vehicle speed.

Additionally, and please do NOT try this yourself: When I am traveling straight, in my experience even the crown of the road is not enough of a factor as I've engaged and disengaged my rear e-locker at 65 MPH without any trouble at all, no clunking or jerking. Very smooth engagement.

Clearly Toyota has that warning there to protect themselves against liability. But please follow wabbit's advise:

More to the point, spinning at different speeds.

Definitely follow the owners manual and take care of your truck!
