I'd do that. B/c mirror deep, is deep enough. And, it gives you a gauge to go by.
Look out window > see water level to > GTFO!

Truth be told, if you're in over mirror deep water, you're in too deep and better be looking to get out anyway. B/c there is a LOT more stuff to worry about other than the outside of your rig.
4Runners would be getting their interiors soaked at that depth.
And as with any snorkel mod, dielectric grease needs to go in every weather connector in addition.
And it gets out-side air. Dramatically cooler than under-hood inside.

I always considered a snorkel... But I thought they give more access for water to get into your intake when it rains/snows being that it's not really covered?
What's the link to that thread if you don't mind...

Considering that cold air intakes have problems when there just on cars that stay on one road I wouldn’t do it. If you do go with a CAI get a by pass valve. This prevents water from getting sucked into the engine if your filter gets submerged in water. then again mud and water are two different things... but here ya go this is the bypass valve i used before and never had a problrm.

well my CAI was used on my b-13 se-r so i cant compare the two really sr20 to a 22re. the theoy is by placing your fliter out of your engine bay is sucks cold air which the colder the air the more dense it is. so power and mpg do go up alittle but to be honest if you off-road at all its a waste of time and money.

Since we're on the subject...
IF, I was gonna do a cold-air. There's a great source right under the stock air box (for EFI).
Just drill a hole through the air box, and the fender apron. You can even make a deflector so mud doesnt get slung right into the hole.
Air will have a straight shot to the filter then.
Water is another story... But, to add to Bobby's post about a valve. There should be a way to rig a float type valve so that if submerged it will float up and shut off the supply, and then it'll go right back to the factory inlet.
Just a tot, but nowhere near a fix.
