I wanted to get some advise, witch headers to use on 1986 22re toyota 4runner? something cheap and easy to put on...It came with headers when I bought it but the r all cracked

 

Cheap and good headers don't belong in the same sentence.

Go Doug Thorley or LC Engineering. Both are expensive, but they will give longevity and performance.

Stay away from pacesetter!

 

Ok well I am talking something thats not 500 bucks...the one i have has the o2 senser right up top...I was looking at the pacesetters but dont c a spot for my o2

 

if you want a good header, dont go with pacesetter. go with lce or doug thorley. i have the doug thorley on mine and heres how it sounds with a flowmaster. i also noticed a bit of performance gain

Thorley has the spot up high, but now only samples one cylinder. Stock manifold sampled all 4. LCE includes material to splice and lengthen your O2 sensor to the connector pipe. Just don't get shielding wire in with your signal wire. It's a sure trouble code.

Of the guys up here we have a Downey (out of business) and I believe 3 LCE's. No complaints.

One guy bought an obx, barely got it out of the box and saw the flange was warped. Sent it back and got an LCE.

Stick with thorley or LCE. Yes they are expensive. But I am no longer fighting exhaust leaks. Money well spent.

wow that doesnt sounds bad at all...sounds way better then the one I have now....How much did ur set up cost?

 

about 400 for the header and i dont quite remember what the flowmaster cost, like 100 bucks or something. but i had an exhaust shop weld it all up and stuff, so i paid labor too.

 

Its to bad that Downey is no longer in business, they built a good header for toyotas. I have one on my 86 4Runner and its a quality part. It wasn`t cheap but it was worth the money.

 

I got the Downey also, didn't know they were out of business.

 

downey here too. Holding up ok, it came with the truck so I don't know how long it was in there. When I had the exhaust done however, the guy had a little trouble welding it as the collector part of it was a little thin because of rusting due to most likely road salt used in the Northeast.

I was planning on getting a header last year and I was going to go with LCE, but then I had to spend that money on a bunch of parts for my front brakes so it never happened.

I have the read that the stock manifold is actually pretty good for low end power, but if I had to buy a header I think I would get a LC Engineering one over the Doug Thorley's as they are a little less expensive but everyone seems to like them.

If I ever have a spare $400 or so just to throw at my truck for performance I think I'd get a new head and cam from engnbldr, a lot more bang for your buck IMHO.

 

The other headers work they are just cheep. Its a car part its like going with duralast vs odesy battery's for cranking amps. I should say that its not so extreme but the difference between interstate and odesy. Me Im buying a nice $140-185 header thats a hell of alot better then what i have stock,save the 200 i dont have laying around and buy the cam shaft that will use the new airflow. If you review alot people talk about getting bad ones. oh it has exhaust leaks then send em back, fix em or throw another gasket on them. For your exhaust system you dont have that much pressure buildup so if you hook a smoker to it you will find the leaks right off the bat

 

well, the pacesetter headers don't even fit what they say they fit, the hedmans are shorties and I have heard some reports on that header having issues with the flange warping on them.

1 or two on here I think have had luck with the OBX headers.

And remember LCE's are 4-1 and are geared towards upper RPM. The Thorley's are 4-2-1 and are geared towards lower RPM.

You get what you pay for these and just because it's a header don't mean a cheapy header is better than your stock one.

IMO duralast vs odesy battery is a bad comparison to a header choice. Think more like Duralast vs Optima Red top vs Optima Yellow Top. As the Red and Yellow tops are better than a Duralast, but they are used in two different ways.

I had a headman header on the truck on my profile pic and it had 35s and it went awesome it sounded good too never had any problems. I have anew truck now though and am gonna be the lc engineering header for it I think they are a lot better it sounds like.
The headman header I had was on there when I bought the truck so I don't know the complete difference it made because of other mods but it sounded good and never had any issues and the truck pushed stock gears with 35s with no issue. 70 down the highway.

 

See my problem is I have a header that came on the runner when I bought it and its cracked, around one of the tubes and has some pin holes in it...So I kind of need another one...Unless I guess I could rip out everything and put it back to stock.... I could put just the stock manifold back on and leave the rest...Would that hurt anything? would i have to change anything else? It does have a cold air intake...

x2. I have always wondered about these. Not for myself, but if there was a reason why not many people use them.

 

They have only been on the market for a short amount of time and relatively the same price as a lcengineering piece so time will tell but trail gear usually puts out sound product and eventually a good price as well.
