Has anyone here done the Deck Plate Modification???

I am getting ready to do this modification to my T100 and would like to know if there is anything different I should do vs. what the Tacoma guys have to do. I noticed there is quite a bit of room on the front of the filter housing and wanted to know, Should I only go with the 4.25" hole or should I do two smaller holes? and Do I need to cut out part of the radiator support to allow for better flow to the front of the air filter? I also noticed that some Tacoma owners are removing the elbow where the air box goes into the front fender area, Has anyone tried this? I will be using my stock filter for awhile until it needs to be replaced at which point I will plan on going with an Amsoil or other brand of filter.

Thanks in advance for your input!

Kevin

I have run the deckplate mod on two different vehicles and tracked my mileage before and after the change. My mpg only got worse when I put my foot in it. MPG remained exactly the same before and after the mod on long trips. So I would disagree with the poster of that thread; I have years of data vs. his 1 trip.

Anyway, as for your question, go with a 4" or 5" = the 6" is a tad big (what I have) and the lip extends past the square part of the box. I am actually running the elbow mod, but I have a lot of mods to worry about.

I did the 4" deckplate and had to offset it from my windshield fluid resevoir so that it would make it easier to insert the plug. Removing the elbow that goes into the fenderwell is a bad idea because it makes it much easier to suck water into your intake (very BAD)

It actually isn't that much easier. I measured it and with the stock snorkel it isn't much different if the vehicle is level and up to the fender trim in water. The stock snorkel does make a difference when the nose is down though, about 6" at 30 degrees (guesstimate). With my elbow cut, I can still submerge the top of my 32's. I don't ever want to go deeper than that though!

Supercharged 3.4's seem to like the elbow mod over the deckplate mod, which is really the only reason I did it.

Carry on.

or the alternative is to offset the deckplate itself towards the upper left hand side

That's what I did. Resevoir tube is on the right side of the airbox.

Ask Bruce about his experiences with removel of that air elbow....
