Hammerite issues?

Got some SKO sliders from Stubbs (excellent service, guy, and product) and I am piecing together my shopping list to paint. I see a bunch of threads stating hammerite black is not really black, more of a grey when dry . I def want black, should I get into som rustoleum enamel instead of the hammerite? I don't have a custom front or rear bumper so matching is not really an issue, but I want it to look right. I'm sure someone on here has some pics or experience regarding whether or not to use the hammerite paint or go with another. I plan on doing the 3M grip tape on the top as well.

Thanks a bunch
Joe aka Henry

I would recomend powder coating. You could probably get both done for about $100 and there are thousands of different colors and textures and it will last and look much better.

screw powdercoating, sliders take abuse and are bound to get knared up. Spary them with rusto clean metal primer then rusto black roks great an will only cost 10 bucks compared to 100. Then you can always touch them up if they take damage.

i also do not reccomend powder coating. I would go with the rusto semi-gloss. Either way, i would go with some form of rusto black. As neilan said, you will be able to touch them up after runs after wheeling. I have also heard that the 3M grip tape is very uncomfortable on your legs if you have shorts. I do not have any on mine and I have plenty of grip getting in/out. Also i have heard the ladies don't like the grip tape either.

Thanks for the replies, I def do not plan on PC based on the fact that its tough to touchup and people have reported it can allow rust to get in underneath (even though rust is not likely too big an issue in AZ).

So the Rustoleum is the way to go? No comments about the color/quality of hammerite? i liked the rough texture of the hammerite but don't really want it to dry a grayish color.

I used the rustolem hammerite on mine and the rustolem auto primer. It looks black when you paint them but once it fully drys it's more of a darker grey. It's doesn't look bad and it's taken some abuse already with no problems. Good stuff.

Hmmm, for some reason I thought the hammerite and Rustoleum were diff products. I'll just check out what Home Depot has to offer tonight.

u're right, they are two diff products. i have both, i used both. and ya, hammerite "black" does dry gray, can look like it has "fish eyes" in it, is super shiny (the glass in it) and has a texture. i don't like it.

rustoleum in a can and a brush is way to go.... if they have it in rattle can that be cool too but.... spray painting tubes is a pain b/c you're only covering like 1/4 inch at a time and waste a lot of paint, have to flip the bumper/slider or whatever a bunch of times..... paint brush works better in my opinion. i've done my brush guard/bumper.... looks good, holds up great.

I used the Hammerite on my Stubb's SLiders on my '05. You are correct, the black does come out more a grey color, almost like a blued gun barrel. I do believe that hammerite is made by rustoleum. I have used my sliders quite a bit, the hammerite is good paint, hasn't chipped with the exception of where it has made contact with rocks, trees etc--which IMO is to be expected, sliders are there to protect the truck. PC looks nice but Rattle can is so much easier to touch up.

Good choice going with Richard's sliders--awesome service and a well built product.

Yeah the SKOs are going to be sweet. I'm not worried about scratching up the sliders I just wanted to be happy with whatever paint I choose. Sounds like I'll be going with a hammered finish rustoleum. Even though others have posted pics of their slider painting process I'll probably start another thread with some progress pics and the before and after shots. I cant wait to ditch the running boards!

This might give you an idea how it comes out during painting.

I also used the 3M rubberized coating after they were welded on (on the frame around the welds and on the ends of the sliders)

Just say no to grip tape.

Those where the ones on my '91 4Runner.
I later had the grip tape sand blasted off and then the sliderz were powdercoated.

Why say no to grip tape?
If you live in shorts like I do most of the year, when you get out of the rig you will from time to time rip open the back of your calfs.

I never did getting in, I stepped in over the sliderz.
But getting out I often caught my leg on them.

No matter how careful you may try, sooner or later you will get bit stepping out of the rig.

That stuff hurts and cuts deep.

Hmmmm damn I already ordered the tape. Paddlenbike mentioned in a PM I could just mount the tape farther towards the inside edge to avoid scraping myself. I'll just have to wait and see how slippery they are, might be a non-issue. My wife is probably the only one who will be stepping on them anyways.

I'll likely get a few cans of Rustoleum 2nite, thanks guys

Who said you can't touch up PC? You can sand it if you want, primer over it, then wet paint over it. Many people use PC as a durable base coat for wet painting over. Why? Because wet paint sucks if you want to bash it and pretty soon you will go through 20 cans of paint because your crap is rusting and flaking off where corrosion has eaten under it. Education....this is all people need on PC.

Durability?

The info needs to be put out because its evident not everyone knows.

Just for a reference point for you guys to look at, take a peek at my powder coating test thread and maybe you can see first hand what kind of durability you would be looking at.
