Got an axle, now???

My rig is a 92 reg cab pickup with a 3.0. I have issues with my IFS. So I recently aquired a solid axle out of an 83 that is in good shape. I have been looking and reading here for last couple of weeks about doing a sas. I have a really good idea on what needs to be done and the setup for the swap. I am capable of doing custom fab work as well as a couple of my buddies and we are thinking that instead of paying for the sas kit, we will fab it ourselves. Is this a good idea or should i just bite the bullet and order the kit? Also, I have not read post that tells what you guys have invested in dollars or hours in the sas! Thanks ahead of time for the replies.

some guys will tell you 300$ and some will say 3,000$. really all depends on your budget, how handy you are, and what you have access too

i say bite the bullet to play it safe.

Dude, keep searching. It is all there. Check out pirate too, I know that there is a custom SAS thread in the faqs. With the right fab and part scavaging abilities and research you can build a stout and funtional rig. But if you lack it will be..... Kinda gives you options on springs and axle position that us kit guys didn't have. Good luck, post up what you are planning/thinking you'll get better feedback than vague SAS question.

If you have a stocked fab shop with tools and materials and know how to use it, go for it. Lots of brackets to make.

If not, buy the kit as why work harder, work smarter.

I used a piece of 2"x3"x1/4" tubing on an s10 i SAS'd, I welded 4 2"x3"x1/4" tabs with a 1/2" hole to the tubing to bolt my leaf springs up.... cost me about $15 in materials, but I was also in a welding school when I made it. I had access to reduced prices on steel, and just about any metal working tool you can think of.

Looking at it now though, you could do it at home if you have a welder, grinder, bence vise, drill press, and some time.

Measure alot, cut once...

I believe after doing a lot more research! A whole lot! Iam gonna get the kit. What the hell, its only a drop in the bucket as far as money goes and it will save me some time on the swap. I will be leaving to go back to work in Brazil in a few more days so I will be starting when I get back in about a month or so. Thanks to all of you for the replies and i will be posting my sas as I go. Wish me luck! haha
