Got a 4 wheel drive question

ok i know its a nub question but need someone to clear this up.
When my hubs are unlocked and i go in 4Low i know it only spins the rear wheels but why does it seem like i can crawl stuff easier in 4 lo even tho am really only using two wheels?

And if i lock my front hubs and put it in 2hi are all 4 wheels getting power? or is it just like driving in 2wd until i shift it into 4 wheel drive?

if am no clear sorry i really just need someone to explain how ever shift of the tcases effects my ride and how the locking hubs work

4lo allows more torque at lower speeds to be applied to the wheels. At lower speeds, the wheels arent going to slip as much so you get more traction.

Hubs locked, t-case in 2hi, no POWER to the front wheels. The wheels/hubs/tires are "locked" to the drive-train, but no power is applied to them via the T-case. Since they are locked to the drive-train, it causes the front drive-train to spin, i.e., front axles, front differential and front drive shaft.

It is just like driving in 2wd until you shift into 4wd.

Did you know that technically you don't have a 5 speed? In reality you have 10 forward gears and two reverse? Hmmmmmmmmm? Yes, you can run you 4lo all the way to fifth...you'll be doing about 30mph

Around here its no bragging rights to be the first one to lock the hubs.... We try as hard as we can to be the last one.

WOW....

YotaR, you EVER been on a farm tractor? Or driven a Semi truck?

Do you have a dead bolt lock on your door? Is the door locked if the bolt is in the "free" position?

Then the front drive shafts aren't "locked" to the hubs that the tires are bolted to... So it can't get power. Like "locking" a door to a door frame...

There are Auto hubs that came on some Toyota, my 4Runner came with them stock. They would lock after 1 forward rotation of the tire after you put the TC in 4WD. To get them to unlock you went in reverse for 1 rotation, the bad news is that this means they unlock even if you need to use 4wd in reverse.

There are also other systems that use vacuum to lock the axles to the center diff and these depend on the vacuum diaphragm and the vacuum hose to all be in good shape other wise no 4WD.

In either case you throw these parts in the trash and get a set of manual hubs.
