Going to bigger tires!! Confused on diff sizes...

Hi all! I searched around but didn't find an answer for my particular question, so forgive me if I missed one!

I am currently running a '00 Runner with a SS 1.2 lift and stock tires 265/75/16 on stock wheels. In talking with Steve when I got my lift, he said that I should have no problems running 33's.

So I go off to Discount's website and there seem to be a lot of options to get tires around 33's, (I used the calculator converts), but I'm not sure what tire will fit on my stock wheels ( 16x7JJ 15 is what the wheel reads ).

In searching the threads, I have seen

285/75/16
255/85/16
33/12.5/16

and I am sure there are more...so I am not sure which size would work out best. The type of wheeling I like to do has a good amount of rock crawling... like running Carnage (we're gonna miss her...) and the like.

I have also read some folks say they had no rubbing with stock wheels...others mentioned they needed spacers or new wheels to make them work.

So instead of getting more and more confused, I thought I would ask the experts!

Also have been eyeing the new BFG MK2's...any opinions?

Thanks all!

285 or 12.5 is too wide for a 7" wide rim.

255/85 will fit great - it's a fantastic size for our trucks!

Simply not true as far as the wheel width itself is concerned.
I ran 35 x 12.50 R15 on 15x7's for a long, long time with no problems what so ever.

Now, having said that, he may have a problem with the back spacing of the stock wheels, but that, in and of itself, has nothing to do with the ability of a 7" wide wheel to be used for 12.50 tires.

Sure, and the Hawaiins run 15" wide tires on 20" wide rims.

Just because you CAN doesn't mean you SHOULD.

I will agree that a bit narrow rim is better than one a bit too wide, especially if you're offroad. You absolutely want more than 2" difference, in my experience running 9.50's on an 8" rim and getting A LOT of rim damage due the tire not having enough "bulge" to protect it.

An 8"-9" wide wheel would be recommended for 12.5" wide tires.

An 8" wide wheel is usually "recommended" for 12.50 tires, but, as I mentioned, 7" wide wheels work just fine and are better off road. Much less chance of loosing a bead.
BTW, there was a typo (which I fixed) in my post above.
That was suppose to read "35 x 12.50 R15" not 15.50

Ohhh - OK, gotcha! Yes, 12.50 on a 7" sounds a bit more reasonable than 15.50" on 7"

actually my 33x12.50x15 swampers call for a 10" wide wheel!.. i prefer to run as TC said, an 8" or 9" wide wheel for 12.50's..

that being said.. i have a question, would a 13.50 be to wide for my 8" wheel?? i mean i know it will mount, but i don't want it to wear excessively on the center of the tire.

p.s sorry for the thread jack!

Simply adjust the air pressure, as you would for any tire that you run or, at least as you should ( ), such that the tire has full tread contact with the ground.

hehe, I'm well aware of adjusting my air pressure to change the wear pattern

but if you tire looks like this.. top side --> "(" id have to run like 10 psi to get a good wear pattern.

basically my question is, has anybody seen/have a 13.00" tire on a 8" wheel?
if so, does it look like this "(" on the top?

i have a 15" wide tire on an 8.5 and it is not really round. they are 39.5 TSL's though so i got alot of side wall on my 15" rim! and i run a low PSI because they are so stiff on the side wall

I've seen a ton of 12.50's on 7" wheels and, no, they don't look like that unless the air pressure is too high an no, you don't have to go 10 psi ....
