I am very new, and can usually figure this stuff out myself. I'm replacing an engine for my husband while he is out of town and I wanna have it done by the time he gets home next week. I am swapping from a 22RE to a 22R in our 87 4runner. The engine is from an '86 pickup. Everything fits and the motor is on the motormounts. The transmission is stabbed and when I turn the crank, the driveshaft wiggles in sync.

My problem is that there is still an uneven gap between the engine and transmission. It's about half an inch on the botom but one and a half inches on top. The shifter seems to be further back in the cab now by about an inch; it won't stay in any bottom gear (2nd, 4th, etc.). Could the transmission have slipped backwards while jiggling the engine in place? Can I just put the bolts in the bottom and tighten until the top is in close enough to start bolts? I don't wanna tear it up, and sometimes I underestimate how much force I can actually apply to these things. The transmission was on a jack so the angles were even for most of the insertion. It looks like the transmission needs to come down in front, but there is nothing holding it up but the bracket and engine.

Yes, i'm a girl...but I am extremely capable and have replaced engines before. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

 

The transmission looks like its at an angle and needs to come up to level it out with the engine, other wise its not going to bolt together.

 

Silly hot tired me overlooked something...me, a girl, forgot about the shaft "nipple" that goes in the pilot bearing...jacked up the rear of the transmission and coaxed it a little and popped right in...working on the bolts now. Thanx!

 

It doesn`t matter that your a girl, at least your out there trying to get it done.

Maybe a little dehydration slowed down the thought process .

I have a question, why switch from a 22re to a 22r? not that common. usually the non-savvy carburetor guys want to swap from 22r to 22re or convert the 22r to EFI

My husband is a simple kinda guy and when he first got it, it ran fine, then had to change to engine to a 93 22re. Worked fine, noticed a small water leak, repaired that, never cranked again. He got really frustrated and was saying that he was tired of "all this electrical bullsh|t" and just wanted a simple carburated engine. We found an '86 22r at Pull-a-Part for $85 with a warranty...jumped on it. We didn't finish before he had to leave for his hitch, and it's the least I can do to surprise him when he returns.

OK well im assumeing that it is running right???

 

Not running yet...I have a 10 month old that demands equal attention. Gotta ask my husband where he left the rest of the transmission bolts tonight...got the exhaust hooked up, got the carb on..got 4 of the transm bolts in...slowly but surely... I want this thing to crank by this weekend!

 

Sorry for your loss. The EFI that Toyota came with is one of the best and most trouble free I've ever seen.

The Japanese, unlike the British/ American, KNOW how to make electronics...

Expect lower MPG, and faster cylinder wall degradation... And maybe the odd CEL light, short or power surge a time or two...
