fuel gauge problems

I have a 91 4x4 pickup w/ a 3vze and auto trans. When i turn the key on my gas gauge comes up around the empty mark no matter how much fuel is in it. I checked the wiring and there are two wires hooked up and a yellow/blue wire that is cut. I can't find the other end or anywhere it was connected. Does anyone know the purpose of this wire and if it could be the cause of my problem?

Nope, Yellow-blue is the idiot light that comes on when you are low on fuel.

Thanks for the info! I tried searching but I'm not very good at this whole forum thing. It seems like a lot of people have fuel gauge problem threads but i can't find any with a solution. I'll drop the tank and check all the wiring and test the sending unit this weekend since now i know the yellow/blue wire isn't my problem. Since it does move a little, I'm leaning towards it being a bad sending unit.
