I have factory 8" 4.10's right now. I'm in need of a re-gearing on my 93 4Runner 22RE, 5spd...

Will the factory 4.88's that came on other 2nd gen trucks and 4Runners swap right in to the front and rear diffs, plug and play? I'm planning on buying the entire 3rd members for both front and rear in hopes that I can swap them out for my 4.10's.

Anyone done this, what is your experience? Did they bolt right up and run well? I've read that most lockers won't work with them but I'm not concerned about that right now.

Under #3, it has write ups with pics so you can see what you are getting into with the swap. I swapped to 4.56's, and it was the best money I have spent on my rig for drivability sake. (The soft top was the best for coolness sake, I guess you could say)

 

soo you can swap in a v6 3rd into a 4cyl ?

ok, I just couldn't tell sarcasm on here, you know.

If you are swapping ENTIRE thirds, they fit no problem. The difference in the 4 cyl and v6 is the pinion inside the ring gear. If you want use the 4 cyl pinion inside the v6 housing, etc, then you run into problems. The v6 has 4 pinions instead of 2 and is considered to be tougher, but if you leave it intact, the axle shafts (rear) and cv's (front) line up perfectly and you are off and rolling.

Is it a problem if the front and rear 3rds are from different trucks? I don't see why it would be, just double checking.

Thats better then what I did. I found the rear third in Snoqualmie, then the front in Bellingham.


And funny, I went with Truckfiend to grab his 4.88's in Yelm, about 5 minutes from Ranier. Maybe they collect them there?

Anyways, how was the install for you, and how do you like them? What size tires are you running?

 

One more question - does the front IFS 3rd have to be an ADD 3rd? Or can I swap in my original left side axle (the extended one) into a non-ADD 3rd.

My truck is ADD.

 

Do you know what those thirds came out of? Chances are it has ADD.

Some folks use their non ADD axle tube to get rid off ADD, I don't see why you couldn't do it in reverse.

I didn't have to deal with any of the ADD stuff on mine. And we just bypassed truckfiends by running a vacuum line to on side and a cap on the other, since he has an 87 pickup and had manual hubs.

 

Ok. Manual hubs are on my list as well.

edit* Just found this pic. The non ADD Diff doesn't have the spot where the actuator fork attaches to. But again, I haven't done it so don't quote me on it.

I was just reading that thread... great pics. Shouldn't be too hard to pull off on a weekend.

I'll be running them on 31x10.50's for at least a couple weeks before I go to 33x12.50's. Shouldn't be a big deal?

How far up is Evans Creek?
