Exhaust Questions

I need to replace my muffler on my 2000 4Runner with the 3.4L and automatic transmission. It's gotten obnoxiously loud lately. I just want a stock sound, nothing loud... any recommendations besides OEM?

Secondly, I'm not sure that the Catalytic Converter needs replaced, but should I just do it at the same time??

How would I know if the Catalytic Converter was going bad?? I don't have any CEL's, and the truck has 160,000 miles on it, but my gas mileage just sucks!

I've replaced the MAF sensor and the Oxygen sensors test well within the specs.

If you're cat is bad then it would probably throw a code. You can go to a local parts store such as Autozone and they will scan it for free normally.

I wouldn't not just buy one because they are expensive.

As far as the muffler I would probably just go to an exhaust shop and tell them what you want. They will probably have something there that is quite.

Here is the stock muffler for $115: http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/de...EPT961105.html

I just replaced my muffler on my 00 limited 4x4 with a Walker Sound FX from Rockauto. It was $88 and bolted right up and looks and sounds just like stock.

My muffer to tailpipe connection is blown out on my 01 due to rust and i can't unbolt the tailpipe from the mufflers it because they are fused together.
I just purchased a new tailpipe and gaskets off amazon for about 60.00 shipped and just bought a walker quiettone muffler off of ebay. see link below. They normally run about 190.00-240.00
I did not want anything louder than the stock. Driving the car with the exhaust gases leaking out after the muffler at the tailpipe connection is enough to drive me crazy as is.
If you would like to wait, this muffler should be here in a day or so and i plan on installing it immediately. I will be glad to post a review of the muffler and take a video after install.
