Engine noise

I drive a 1994 toyota pickup. My engine has been making a weird clicking noise. It is not extremely loud, but is definitely noticeable. It seems to stop sometimes. Any ideas of what this can be??? I have 160,500 miles on the truck.

22re. Its hard to determine but i think it stops once i reach a constant speed, like on the freeway. When i accelerate and slow down, it makes the noise. Im not sure this is totally accurate. What kind of noise down a bad timing chain make??

Just sounds like a normal 22re to me

If you don't know, 22res are infamous for valve ticking Adjust the valves yourself (its very simple and will take less than an hour your first time) or pay someone to do it, but it will probably be at least $100.Then, while you have the valve cover off adjusting the valves, take a look down the timing chain area and see if your chain guides are broken and/or missing.

The more I listen to it, the more its starting to sound like it IS coming from the front of the engine--timing chain area. Either way, warm your truck up, and take the valve cover off. Adjust the valves while there, or at least check them with a feeler gauge. should be .008" intake, .012" exhaust. Search on here for proper precedure, or if you have like a Chiltons manual, refer to that . (better yet, if you have done it before) I don't know your mechanical ability, so sorry if I offend you.

Thanks for the help. A buddy of mine mentioned it could be a valve. I haven't done much with cars, so im on here to learn. Ill definitely look into checking the valves and Im thinking about changing the timing chain because i dont know if it has ever been changed on this vehicle.

t-chains should be replaced between 140K-160K miles I believe. If/when you do the t-chain, replace the water pump and get some metal timing chain guides if it doesn't already have them.
How many miles does it have?

I bet you the T-chain needs to be replaced. I'm assuming it hasn't been done on this vehicle? I'm sure the valves are noisy as well.

I've been hearing that on my 94 for a while...the timing chain was wore slap out and was smacking in the engine. Sometimes it would smack slow then sometimes fast, but never all the time. After i replaced my timing chain everything was quiet. Hope you get it sorted out

New short block from Toyota would have a new TC. To be sure, look at your reciepts. They would have listed all replaced parts.

My 22 re sounds exactly the same. I just replaced the whole top end except the rocker assembly with all new components, also did rings and bearings in the bottom. New timing chain new head new vlvs new tapets for rockers and it still sounds like that. I order all new rails and rocker arms cause i heard that if the old ones are worn il never get the clearances right. Should get the new rails and arms soon hope that works.if that quiets mine down after setting the vlv clearances ill let you know.
