Engine Noise

Hello all! I'm new here. I help run a local Toyota off road club here in Bend, Oregon and found yotatech the other day and have been pretty much glued to it since.

I've got a problem that I can't figure out. It's been getting progressively worse over time and it's starting to worry me. I don't think its a vacuume leak, but it might be my belts but I'm not positive.

What happens is..

When its cold on the way to work, it does it the worst if you ask me.
When its warm, it does it too, but not as bad.
It doesn't do it all the time. It comes and goes.

However...it doesn't do when the truck is off.

Take a peak and tell me what ya think.

Thanks!

EDIT: It's a 1988 Pickup 3.slow 5spd with 184k mi.

Sounds possessed! Call a Priest!

Put a vacuum gage on the engine and if there is no leak, engine is warm, and no mechanical problems, you should get a steady 20" or so vacuum.

If the vacuum is low, I suspect a plugged catalytic converter. They tend to build pressure and often, when the motor is turned off, you can hear air coming back through the intake. Sluggish acceleration and poor performance will be present.

Its not belts or bearings in my opinion.

My $0.02

No cat problem here. It's been gone for some time. Previous owner cut out all mufflers/cat and put 1 cherry bomb haha.

sounds like it has a supercharger lol. might want to inspect the timing belt, could be the belt tensioner. Usually sounds like that when an accessories like an alternator or air conditioner pump is going bad.check the alignment of the belts too.

you can use baby powder and puff some of it around the motor. if there is a vacuum leak it should show up pretty quick. you will see white powder get sucked down faster

Wouldn't that make a huge mess and be blown around by the fan? I've double checked all my hoses and i'm pretty sure it's not a vacuum leak.

EDIT: Someone suggested throw out bearing. Thoughts?
