I got a 1989 toyota pickup 22re 2.4 litre I got a problem with. It Got a knocking sound when I start and it hits 2000 rpm just knocks hard till it gets to 2500. Continues to knock mainly when I push the clutch in to shift. Sounds like it's comin from valves but not to sure. Any help?

When is the last time you did a full tune-up? What are the last few things you've done on it? Have you tried running a higher octane fuel to see if it gets better?

I had that problem too, 6000 miles later I spun a rod bearing. Originally thought it was a timing chain. Take your valve cover off and inspect the chain guides first. Otherwise that sounds like the symptoms I had and you better start planning for a new engine or rebuild. Valve chatter these are known for doesn't come and go like that.

 

Haven't had a tune up since I got it a year ago. Kinda what I was lookin into got all the valve gaskets to do a valve check but not a damn clue on what to do. Haven't tried octane fuel yet and really haven't done anything to it. New exaust and Monifold is aboot it

 

Take xxxtreme's advice - tear it apart and see what's doin'. Replace what you can and just start preparing for the worst.

Rod bearing would be bottom end. If it turns out to be that, your gonna have to replace or rebuild the entire engine. Some people have taken the oil pan off and just replaced the bearings, but I highly recommend against doing that, especially if it's already been knocking.

Take the valve cover off and look at your timing chain guide(s) first mainly the drivers side guide. As it tends to have the same types of symptoms as a rod bearing that is just starting to go bad. It does sound slightly different then a worn out rod bearing but to someone who's not familiar with the many different types of knocks it can sound the same.

This I feel is NOT a valve tick. As a valve tick doesn't just come and go like that. And besides even with a brand new engine, the valve train on these engines are loud to being with.

yeah man thats sounds like my truck when i bought it, you can get the bottom end rebuilt for about 350$ but its better just to rebuild the whole motor.

Ok maybe I should kept the word rebuild out of it at first. Unless this is an engine ping, a tuneup doesn't typically make an engine noise go away. You shouldn't be talking going right to rebuild unless you have taken that valve cover off and see what's going on with the timing chain. It's extremely simple to take off and you shouldn't have to take it to a mechanic to inspect the timing chain guides.

Bad timing chain guide and/or rod bearing isn't gonna show up on an ecu scan either.

A bottom end rebuild is gonna cost you a heck of alot more then $350 if yur gonna have a mechanic do it for ya.

 

So am I just gunna look and make sure my chains nice and tight? how would I inspect my valves?

Sounds like more than valve train issues to me. You need to get a mechanic to listen to it or post a video up to youtube so people can listen to it.

 

I started it and runs rough. Possibly out of timing. I ll check on timing chain possible bad.
