emission equipment

as you may have seen in my other posts i have a 1989 pick up . 4x4 , 22re , 5 speed. it hasn't been running the greatest since i bought it. (please see other thread : few problems with few questions.) i am new to the toyota 4x4 truck scene. i have a tube coming off of the air box that goes to nothing. the old owner removed the a/c and i thought it went to that. well, i have been looking through my Haynes manual and noticed it goes to the resonator that in turn goes to the AS Reed Valve. could this cause it to run like it is? PLEASE help. if i need these parts where i can ifind them. so far no luck with autozone type stores.

Hmmm. Not likely. The PAIR valve when operating sucks air through the resonator and injects it into the exhaust stream (which helps burn up Hydrocarbons in the exhaust, which you get when the engine is cold and the computer calls for a rich mixture). I believe that the resonator is upstream of the air volume gauge, so it having it open shouldn't be affecting your mixture. To tell; stick your thumb on the resonator connection (so no air can be sucked in) and see if it runs better.
