I'm new to Toyotas and not great at working on cars anyways. I had just adjusted the throttle body sensor on my 86 4Runner with 22re and was going to check timing. Like an idiot I put the jumper in the wrong plug and the engine stopped and won't start again. I think I jumped the O2 diagnostics plug. It turns over and has spark. The check engine light will not come on when I turn the key and put the jumper in the correct plug. I tried a couple different ECUs, changed O2 sensor, circuit opening relay and main relay.
No luck.
The plug I jumped first is a bigger plug with 3 wires.
If you could give me an idea on what I messed up I would greatly appreciate it!!
You might want to look for open Fuses or even a fusible link.
the first thing I did was check all the fuses. Not sure about fusible links. I will do some research on that to find where they are
If you don`t have a multi meter is now time to invest in one
I do have a multimeter. That's what I was using to adjust the throttle body sensor
A picture of just what you jumped would be a big help
All these parts were correct for your vehicle ??
as far as I know. Everything was off an 86 4Runner 22re
Did you even do any trouble shooting ??
I checked fuses first. I confirmed that there is spark. I can hear the fuel pump when I hook up the battery. A buddy said he thought I probably fried the ECU so I found a replacement. That didn't work so I tried to figure out what the plug I shorted was for and best I can tell is it's an O2 sensor diagnostic plug. That's when I replaced the O2 sensor. Still didn't fire up so I replaced the two relays.
The check engine light will not come on when the key is turned and the jumper is in the correct plug so that's why I though maybe the ECU I swapped in was bad. That's when I tried another ECU with same results.
Just replace things ??
I am not great at troubleshooting so I'm hoping you can at least get me started in the right direction.
It sounds like you blew the EFI fuse. In my 89 4Runner V6, it's in the driver's side kick panel left of your left foot while driving. It's a 15A fuse. I'm not sure what those connectors are for. Mine doesn't have them. The EFI fuse sends power to the ECM. You probably wouldn't get a check engine light if the ECM is not powered but not 100% sure of that. Changing ECMs would not solve your problem if the fuse is blown. The new one would not have power to it either. Post a picture of the fuses you checked.
so you checked all of the fuses in the drivers side kick panel? there is also a circuit breaker there, at least on my '86, not sure what it's for, i've blown it repeatedly when working on the rear window relay circuit... how about the fuses under the hood, and the fusible link, next to the battery?
It's confirmed, I'm an idiot! I rechecked the fuses and found a blown one. Runs good now. No idea how I missed it. At least I learned some things and have some spare parts now.
