To dangerous to drive after rough country install

Hey guys I am in need of some assistance. I just got a rough country 5" lift installed on my 1990 4runner, it was professionally installed then afterwards taken for a wheel alighnment. Anyways this thing is insane it's all over the road .If I hit a divit or bump i have to counter steer because it snakes all over. Feels like the back end is swingin around or something. This must be a common problem after installing a rough country lift? Any body know what I can do???? Thanks Alot!!!!!!!!

Get a bigger, new stabilizer to handle the bigger tires?

My 92 4runner has the same problem after a rough country 4" lift on 33.s install. Got a new stabilizer and order some sway bars so well see what happens.

I had the same thing when I put a 4" on my truck. Got a bigger stabilizer and it fixed the problem. Of course getting that old one out is another story.

Mine is the same way. I have a 4" Superlift on my 94 4Runner. Mine is all over the road and I'm running 35" tires. It could be tramlining with the big tires. I think it has to do with the rear panhard rod. Does anyone make poly bushings for the panhard rod itself?

Having the panhard bar go out of whack wont generally cause your car to "wander", atleast not in my experience. Just causes uneven wear of the tires and a possible pull in a certain direction. I know we're talking about lifting but when I lowered my car my rear axel was out to one side by about 1-2" maybe in the rear and I didn't feel it :e-shrug: Then when your torque rods get uneven you find that the rear end keeps going in a certain direction when doing burnouts haha

Yes it will. It keeps the axle from moving in a lateral direction. Remember, wherever the rear wheels are pointing the front wheels want to follow that path so if the axle is moving side to side it will make the truck wander.

First thing I'd do is take it back to where you got it installed and make a tech drive it. They will probably just tell you that a lifted vehicle drives different than a stock one though and leave ya hanging. Did they do a 4 wheel alignment or just a two wheel on the front end? Hope you get it fixed...nothing worse than doin a mod to your vehicle to make it look better only to find out it ruins another part of the vehicle.. been there done that.

Technically you cannot really do a 4wheel alignment on a solid axle vehicle. You can but not much to adjust in the rear. The truck is definitely going to handle and ride different than stock but mine wanders too much to be acceptable.

After my 3" lift, I was having stability problems too.
I simply replaced the sway bar bushings front and rear. Solved that problem.

although, 5" is very different from a 3"...

Two different suspension setups. Although the rear is roughly the same on your truck as it is to the 2nd gen 4Runners, your front suspension is entirely better than the 86-95 trucks. Your 3" includes springs and/or spacers for the front, ours uses brackets and steering knuckle extensions which adds to the problem.

Something is wrong..... I have 4" rough country lift and 35" tires, no sway bars... and mine drives better than before the lift. (It had blown shocks before...)

I also did the ball joints when doing the lift and made sure everything else was fine.

You are having the exact problem I have been having. I replaced all the steering components and had alignment done by 2 different shops. The one has been doing front end work for 30 years. He said that to him, it felt like the problem was coming from the rear. I pulled all the bars in the back to check bushings, and nothing looks bad. I tried Rough Country customer service and that was a joke. The guy I talked to when I called took my number and said he would talk to r & d and call back....no call back. I have emailed 2 times and got no response. Tried to call again and got no live person. What tires are you running? I thought maybe my General Grabbers were too aggressive and have been trying to find someone with all terrains to let me try them out. Also, did you have to crank the torsion bars a lot to get it near level. I had to turn them over 2 inches to get it close, otherwise it looked like a pro-street Nova. What is your measurement from ground to the top of the wheel well in the rear. Please post if you find a fix as I am frustrated and about to give up here.

well to the new posters asking the same question. This may sound dumb and I have a SAS done already but my yota was chasing bumps and potholes and after installing a stabilizer it got better but didnt solve it. Your problem could also be that you are low or have too much power steering fluid. Add that to your list to check. I topped mine off to appropriate levels and it solved my issue. no more bump chasing for me.

Sorry to resurrect such an old post, but I'd like to know if any of the posters ever found a good fix for their steering wandering problem?

I recently bought a 1993 4Runner that has a 5" Rough Country drop bracket lift, and it wanders like crazy above 30 MPH. I've had the alignment checked twice, and it's been to my mechanic multiple times, and so far everything checks out. We're at a loss as to what the issue is, but I really would like to get it fixed. I can't drive the thing on the highway until I do!

Thanks!
