Code 71

I'm coming up with a code 71 today. It's if I'm correct vsv or egr related. The vsv was replaced 2 weeks ago and the mech. checked out the egr and said that it was fine. I was having work done to pass the E test. Would bad hose line cause this code, also is it possible that the Seafoam I ran through it last night is the culprit? It came up maybe after 30 miles of driving after seafoaming and over night parked.

71 is telling you that the temperature sensor in the EGR is not seeing a high temperature (from the recirculated exhaust gas) in the EGR when the ECU tells it to open. So a plugged vacuum line that prevents the EGR from opeing can do it. Or soot/carbon buildup inside the EGR or on the temp. sensor can insulate the sensor from seeing the full exhaust gas temp. or reduce the gas flow so that it does not get hot enough to satisfy the ECU that the EGR valve is working.

So for a start should I check all vacuum lines leading to and from the egr?

Yes, that is easy to do. Both the vacuum line as well as the little fittings they slide onto can get clogged. The Factory Service Manual has a full multi-page test procedure for the whole EGR system.

I don't have an FSM, am I able to remove and completely clean the egr, or is there anything to delicate with it for cleaning?

FSMs are not hard to obtain:

and there are a few versions floating around on the net if you search for them.

EGR can be cleaned to some degree. I used a gun/pistol cleaning kit on mine, the gun cleaning solvent worked well on the carbon deposits and the small brushes allowed access to some of the internal passages.
