If $600 is cheap, I know at least one guy who's gonna weld the crap out of his rear axle...

I've had excellent results from aussie lockers and lock rights, and broke both of the Spartans I tried, although I've only ever bought lockers for jeeps, and have had just as many welded.axles as lockered ones. My opinion of the Spartan locker is that if it happens to be the weakest link in a Dana 35, which has a reputation for being junk, then the Spartan must REALLY be a piece of crap.
ring and pinion like everyone in a D30/35 is so small there just isn't any room so locker has to be small. Plus many jeeps are 6cyl add tiny axles and big tires, well you&I've seen the result. Welding is fine but wears the hell out of tires and strains all driveline parts on road. So trail queen trail only rig hell yeah. But cheap initial investment will add up to costing more in the long run if your like me and have no plans to part with rig anytime in the foreseeable future.
