Changing ADD to manual What to buy
I have a 91 4runner with the ADD. I would like to switch to manual. After reading a few of these post it sounds like if I can find a donor Toyota truck from the late 80's I can use those hubs. Is there anything else I need to buy?
Thanks.

Just did the manual hub conversion the other night. Best mod ever - you can actually feel the truck coasting easier! I am looking forward to seeing what happens with the gas mileage!!!

now the electric fan mod has given me an average of about 1-1.5 mile per gallon(city not highway)
btw, all you need is the hubs, and the gaskets(if using aisin) there is a writeup in the the writeup section showing how to rebuild them, what gaskets to get, and if you want to replace the bolts, what size bolts to get.

if you want to truly remove the add though then you need to find a drivers side axle tube from a non add diff then get the correct oil seal from your local stealer. Once you have those just pull off the old add tube press in the new seal and bolt up the new tube. Install your manual hubs and you're almost there. Trace the vacuum lines from the diff up into the eninge bay to find the vsvs then either remove those completely or just put little caps at the end where the hoses connect

What do you mean if you want to truly remove the ADD? Do I need to switch tubes? I have a couple of used hubs spotted at a salvage yard. I thought I just needed to remove the ADD caps and replace them with the manual. I think the manual hubs are from a 86-90 pickup. Do I only need the drivers side? Is it a short explaination on why the tube switch is necessary?
Thanks.

if you remove the drive flanges and replace them with manual hubs you are gaining the ability to unlcok your axles from your wheels which adds live to your cvs and adds mpg (sometimes) but you're still left with ADD. The ADD system is NOT the flanges those are just the part that puts drive to the wheels. The ADD system disconnects the drivers side inner axle from the differential, hence the name Automatic disconnecting Differential. In order to eliminate this you need a non ADD axle tube which gets rid of the actuator that connects/disconnects the axle as you can see in this thread that (I think) you posted in: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/show...=add+axle+tube. You can also do it like this: http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/tech/add/ which is cheaper and easier

in removing the add system you loose the ability to shift on the fly to and from 4x. keep the above mentioned aritcles in your favourites section, wheel with the manual locking hubs and your current add system for now. if you feel the need to eliminate the add system in the future, you can revisit those articles and give it a go. either way, you will have gained some mechanical work experience and maybe, saved yourself some money.
i cant believe i just said 'save money' on a toyota modding site! i must be suffering from cabin fever.

Do you gain any thing from removing the ADD? What are the advantages? I like the idea of shifting in and out on the fly with hubs locked in. I am going with the manuals because of gas mileage. This is some great information. Thanks to you all!!!!

you wont notice much if any difference in fuel economy. ive had my manual locking hubs on for a year and a half and keep pretty good records of km's driven and fuel burned. the weather will play a more significant role in fuel economy than any thing else.

the only thing you gain is some reliability if you wheel hard because you eliminate the change of pulling out or tearing the vacuum hoses etc. most of us still have our add though and just run manual hubs. I'm going to get rid of it once it fails

Per the 4x4wire article:
Eliminating the ADD system works with either the ADD hub flanges or manual hubs. With either hub type, you retain shift-on-the-fly capability: however, with manual hubs you eliminate any front drivetrain "drag" with the hubs unlocked and in 2WD.
