Carb Problems

So I have an 82 Toyota long bed 4x4 sr5 with a stock 22R that likes to bog and sputter when I give her throttle. I did all of the diagnostics and found out that it was a bad carb as a whole.

What I am wondering now is, what are my options. Should I buy a weber? The rebuild kit wont work on a bad housing, I would need a new carb to be put in. I would be willing to pay for a used 2 barrel if someone was parting out and it would fit.

Thanks a ton

If you can afford the Weber it is worth the cash.

Webers are great and well worth the $$. Very easy to install and simple in design compared to the Aisin. I think rebuilding a Weber in a few years should be fairly easy.

Kind of a new direction here... This is the first time I've posted. Honestly I'm not a huge do-it-yourself guy when it comes to autos, but I picked up an 87 4X4 truck for $500, and I'm trying to figure out some of the problems myself as I don't have the money right now to pay someone else to do it. Anyway, It runs, but real rough until it warms up. Some of the vacuum hoses aren't hooked up, and some of the nipples where they are supposed to attach are broken. I know that one thing I need is a new VSV, as it has a broken nipple. However, there is a part that I can't find a name for. It is the part that the top hose off of the VSV goes to. Any suggestions? I'm pretty much in over my head, but I'm trying to muddle through without making things worse.

first step would be download a FSM here: http://www.ncttora.com/fsm/87-4Runne...4runner_88.pdf

most of the vacuum diagrams you will need are in it. if not the autozone website has good repair guides as well. They will also have the vacuum diagrams.

next is where are you from as many people on here are willing to help others out that might be local. Putting this info in your profile is a big help.

Thanks for the help. I think I've got a start, if I can figure out the name of that second broken part. I've got a line on a truck I can get parts off of for a very reasonable price. I'm located out in the country near Independence, KS.

So I'm looking at the vacuum diagram, but the part that the top hose from the VSV goes to isn't labeled.

Get a haynes manual. Cheap but good. Start plugging vacuum lines. Process of elimination for the hoses that are labeled.

Got a manual on the way. Talked to a guy with an 83 that has a 22r, and I'm going to go look at it to see what everything is "supposed to look like." I'm going the get all the vacuum hoses hooked back up and an air cleaner on and see where we are from there. Thanks for the help everyone!

that 83 is gonna look different. do you have the emissions sticker on the hood? that should also show you where everything is.

maybe posting up some photos of whichever section you are working on will help us help you as well.

does either of these photos help?

Yes, the diagrams are better than the ones I currently have, especially since they have what I assume are part numbers (?). I'm starting to wrap my head around some of this. Thanks again.

yup those are part numbers, I had to re-size them to fit here though so the numbers got trashed a little.

BTW only follow the one that matches the parts you have under your hood, one is for the trucks with the high-altitude and the other without. Depending if your truck is like mine I had to use the top one and just ignored the HAC section.

BTW yours is carburated right?

Yeah. Just glancing quickly, I need a new VSV and (the part that I couldn't identify) a filter #23265. Plus I need a new air cleaner assembly as it didn't have one when I acquired the truck.

I have an air cleaner assembly I think from my old setup, if I didn't throw it away. As far as that filter goes, it's freakin expensive. Either find one in a junk yard or rig a few vacuum splitters up, all that thing is is a 3 way vacuum port with a small screen in it. Don't worry many on here have broken that part as well as myself. I fixed it by using some epoxy to seal the broken port and added a few vacuum tees to the lines to hook the other vac lines to it. This was before I added the weber carb.

Well, at least I have a starting point now. A week ago I was so lost that it made me dizzy. Hopefully after this weekend I will have an idea of more things to do!
