you do realize that adding a breather filter like that causes an metered vacuum leak right? Carbed vehicles "might" be able to get away with it with some tweaking of the carb mixture, but EFI's are not gonna like it.

your engine doesn't suck air through the valve cover how would it get more air if adding a breather filter? Well it will get more air by sucking in air through the breather via the PCV valve but all that takes place effectiely bypassing the AFM. Which means the motor is getting more air to it than the ECU sees, which can possibly cause a lean fuel mixture, which is a no no on any motor and is absolutely a very bad thing on a turbo motor.

The photo above is fine since your disabling the PCV system. But the PCV system almost adds to you gas mileage not takes away from it. This is only in theory though since the PCV system is meant to allow you to burn un burnt gas fuses from the crank case.

People do these things because they do not understand how an engine works and thus do not understand what the consequences are of such modifications. They do them because of the "cool" factor. But IMO there is nothing cool about possibly running your engine lean and therefore warping heads, burning valves, putting a hole in a piston etc etc.

thats the exact breather filter that i bought from kragen auto. what are the benefits of doing this

 

if you submerge the rear diff in water it has the possibility to suck water in through the factory breather. Especially if you stop turning the wheels. Extending it and adding a filter will minimize this or eliminate that chance altogether.

 

nice, did you do this to yours? if you did, what are the steps, or is there a write-up on this already? I think I know how to do this already, but I would like to see exactly what the steps are. I also need to change my differential fluid anyway so this might go along with that project. Do you know how to change your differential fluid?

FYI your front diff also has one of these as well. but usually a 90 degree adapter will be needed to clear some stuff under there.

Not sure the manual trans and transfer case has them though.

Back to the original breather question, I have one of those stupid little breathers on the front of my valve cover only because the rubber hose that was there was hard and brittle, basically fell apart in my hands when I was putting the motor back together. I had the breather lying around and had also taken notice that all of pictures of engines LCE's site have one? It is just a vent for crankcase pressure right? I don't notice my engine not liking it, I was worried at first that it might spray oil, but it doesn't so far.

EDIT: Just remembered why I did not put another piece of hose there, IIRC the hose had a curve in it an was a different size on the ends.

 

they also sell them with their intake kits as well, but Personally I do not like the idea of un metered air making it's way into a motor.

 

I recently replaced both hoses that come out of the top of my 22RE valve cover - they were brittle and cracking too....I think each was less than $10 for OEM at www.toyotapartszone.com. Cheaper than dealer.
