Question Which is better: cheapo component speakers or 3-way coaxials

My '89 4Runner came with no audio system whatsoever; no deck, no speakers, so I want to install a new system. It's not going to be anything serious, just so I can listen to Red Sox baseball, Rush Limbaugh, and the occasional CD. I'm pretty sure I want this deck:

My question is about the speakers. I don't want to bother with an amp, so I want to know whether it'd be better to use cheapo component speakers like these:

or slightly better 3-way coaxial speakers like these:

Once again, I don't want to run an amp, and I have my doubts as to how good component speakers would sound without one. I just want the bare essentials for acceptable sound. And I don't want to spend much money. Any help you can give would be just great!

either way would work just fine if your mounting them in the doors. The 3 ways would be the simplest to wire. If you go with the components, you could use the front leads for th tweets, rears for mid range and be able to balance the highs with the fader on the deck.

Well, the speakers will definitely be mounted on either side of the rear seats because the last owner cut two neat holes back there. I doubt this would be a great setup for the 3-ways, but maybe someone else knows better?

BTW, thanks for the replies!

Behind the seats, either will sound ok. I would go three way though.
Or spend the money and get a real set of components.

Do it right the first time. You'll always be happier!

I took 4th place at the IASCA World Finals with coax's...

KEF sells some very highly regarded speakers that rely on coax speakers...

Here's the deal though - speakers are what produce the sound, and there are more differences between speakers than ANY source device or amplifier. You want a decent sounding stereo? Cheap out on the head unit and spend the extra on good speakers. I LOVE JL Audio - their tonality is absolutely top notch. There are others too - Infinity Reference, Boston Acoustics - where you can't go wrong with any of their speakers, but JL is the way to go.

A "3-way" coax is all marketing hype. Note that it's a mid a tweet and a super-tweet. Guess what - even if the super-tweet is hooked up (and sometmes its not on cheap speakers) you either can't hear that high or it will be masked by road noise. Get a good, high quality 2 way coax and call it good.

Did not know that about 3-ways, but the only reason I'm considering those specific 3-ways is because their the cheapest speakers in the Kenwood line that are more than 1-way (bass). If I go coaxial, which it looks like I will, I was hoping to match Kenwood speakers to the Kenwood deck. However, I will have a look at JL Audio. Thanks!

No reason to brand match between the electronics and the speakers. If you already had some speakers, there may be a reason to brand-match them as the "voicing" (the general sound) should be similar.

If you just want cheap, pep boys had a combo pack with a sony deck and a pair of 2 ways for $99. I bet they would have the sale online too.
