Automatic shifter problem

Hiya. First of all, thanks for clicking on the thread.

I searched high and low and couldn't find much help with my problem so I'm making a thread. Believe me I'd much rather fix things on my own than ask for help...but since I've hit the limits of my patience, here goes...

I was installing a new deck into my dad's 4runner. I found a walkthrough on the net and followed it as closely as I could. I was doing alright, until I misread an instruction. I thought that I was supposed to remove the automatic shifter (it said to remove/tilt the panel, not the shifter itself). So, I undid the two screws and tugged on the knob. As I was doing this, the button for the shifter took a nice little hop outside it's socket and landed near the gas pedal.

This is the problem...I finished installing the deck, and everything works great, but I can't get the @$#()* button back in. I don't know what it is. I can't place it all the way back into the socket, and it won't "click" back into place? Did I mess up more than I thought? Help me out, would ya?

Again, thanks for clicking on this thread (responding would be even better!). I know how tiring it can be to answer question after question after question...

Might help if you identified what year vehicle it is and what transmission setup it has. A picture of what you are asking about might help, too.

Oh geez. 1997 automatic v6 4runner. It's two wheel drive. I'd provide pics but I'm seriously leaving the country in a few hours and I'm a pretty pressed for time. I really wanted to take care of this before I left >_<
