auto or manual

Hi Just joined and im looking for advice
i have a 82 pickup with a manual trans
and im looking at a 4runner so i can take my wife and 2 boys out wheeling. im looking for a 2door with the removable top. and i have found lots with auto's but not to many with stick. my plans are to build it up over time 4-6" lift and 35s or maybe 37s(i have a 05 dodge deisel with 4" lift and 37s and its a standard) im thinking an auto would be easier for the wife. but i wonder how durable it would be with big tires and a lift. i would be changing the gears in the diffs to 4.11 or lower. I have 2 manual trans from my 82 would they fit in a 4runner? i know i would have to add the clutch and everything. but will it bolt to the motor and transfer case and work? thanks for any insite you guys can provide

i havent bought one yet im looking at 2 or 3 and they all seem to have to have the 22re. but i have a 22r and a 20r (it has had new pistons and rings and been bored over so it is techically a 22) sitting in the garage that i could use

The trannys should work if the runners got a 22re. I did a 5speed swap on mine and it was simple

if your looking for a first gen 4runner it will more than likley have the 22r or 22re. i would recommend a standard trans with bigger tires. you'll get a hair more power out of it. even with gears the mass of the tires will eventually take a toll on a stock auto tranny. just my $.02. hope it helps.

i think ill get one of the ones with the Auto they seem to be in better condition.and i can to the manual swap later as my build up progresses being i have 2 donar trucks and another spare manual trans it should be easy. thanks guys for all the input. and watch for pics ill post them right from purchase, all the way through the build up.
FYI my dad has a 81 pickup with the 22r and a 4 speed manual with 183000kms original. and it is almost bone stock and he still drives it regularly, again ill post pics when i get home next week.

If you have a doner truck with all the parts, then a manual swap will be easy, just remove from one truck and put it in the other.

Just teach your wife how to drive standard. Standard is incredibly easy to drive, it astounds me that so few trucks and cars are standard when there are so many benefits- fuel economy, longevity, feels like more power, more control etc etc etc.

Manual or Automatic?... Manual if you want to drive your 4Runner. Automatic if you want your 4Runner to drive itself.

she drives stick in my 05 dodge with 37s and 450hp but thats cheating you can start in 3rd and it wont stall. she used to drive my supra yrs ago but on the street is not the same as on the trail on a side hill. but i think ill look for a stick but if a auto comes along that is to good to pass up ill take it and do the swap later.
heres a another one for you 4cyl or V-6 i know lots about the 20r and 22r and the RE's my dad still daily drives his and ive had a few but i dont know anything about the V6s are they as reliable? as easy to fix? is the extra power worth the extra weight?
thanks again guy for the advice i am taking it all into consideration
