Ash Tray Question

Hi Guys:

I have a 2003 4runner and it came with an ashtray insert in the center console.

Can anyone tell me what the little metal grille-looking thing in the picture is for? You can see it on the right side of the ash tray container.

Thanks!

To snuff out the cigarette...beats using the floorboard.

it's safer to snuff out a lit cig on a hard-surface vs sticking it into a reservoir full of dried up butts and ash since there's a fire risk involved (i've seen it happen several times). my second comment is regarding people being stupid for littering by tossing lit cigs out their windows.

Gotcha! Thanks a lot. You're saying it is still for snuffing it out but especially when the tray is already loaded.

Yup same effect as if you swiped your smoke on a cheesegrader, breaks the cherry up so it doesn't catch the rest of the butts on fire or smolder them. But lazy smokers let the ashtray get overfilled and at that point it doesn't matter.

It is for butting out your cigarette. So just out of curiosity what did you think it's for?

Thanks a lot guys! I really did not know what it was for. I considered that it might be a handle to take out the ash tray and empty it, but I do not know. I don't smoke cigarettes my vehicle just came with it.
