annoying ticking

OK heres the skinny. After searching for about a year I bought a 1993 4cyl 5spd 136,000 miles reg cab. Test drove it, with no weird sounds and everything was where and how it should be so I bought her on the spot. But now I hear this damn ticking(kinda like a tractor). It doesnt sound like valve train, something lower. And it comes and goes when it wants, sometimes I'll drive all day and hear it for maybe 10 minutes. Other days its half and half. I rarely hear it on the highway drive at about 100kms. I know it needs a new clutch so could that cause this? Or maybe just something loose under the hood? Any help would be great

Thanks

Could be a cracked exhaust header (or loose).
They can and will make a ticking sound and, depending on how big the crack is and where is located it may only do it when say it's cold, or it's warm or whatever.

yeah I was kind of thinking that also, my buddies pathfinder does it too but only for like 5 minutes. I'll take a look at them now.
Thanks

I think tightening the bolts worked, 4 or them needed atleast a half turn to get snugged, a problem though. I broke a bolt on the manifold heat shield, how important is it? Will I start melting wires?

Could be your injectors or valves.
