87 4runner turbo swap

So I recently bought a 1987 4runner that was just a base model. It's not bad but I'm considering swapping in the turbo motor from the same year. I know they only came with an auto trans so I'm wondering I'm my 5 speed manual will hold up to the added power... Any sort of input would be helpful

gee and what location would that be since you don't say?

keep reading...R151F is a 5 speed that came on turbo trucks
they also had a 23 spline shaft on the TC vs 21 spline on the other trucks,
rear turbo differential also had 4 pinions like a v-6 third.

California's pretty big...you may want to be more specific as to where you are

For starters, you can update your sig or avatar to indicate where the Sam Hill you are.

they came in 5speed to, the 4runner model only came in auto but the pickup had the 5speed tranny, the turbo 5speed tranny is different then the regular 5speed tranny they both work tho but the turbo one is stronger.

the turbo tranny has 23 spline to the 23spline transfer case. (r151)

the normal 5 speed tranny has 21spline

Be cheaper and much less hassle to just buy a 22RET model already.

probably be just as expensive doing a 3.4 swap. Probably easier too. lol. I haven't done it so that would be just my opinion.

Cost per HP is definitely better with the 3.4 swap I would imagine too.
