86 yota gear shift collision.

I have an 86 model 5 speed 4X4 and when I put it in 4 low the main gear shift knocks the 4 wheel drive shifter out of gear when I shift from 1st to 2nd gear. This sucks when your in the mud and need the higher gear. Is there any thing I can do to fix this problem? I've considered heating the 4X4 shifter with a torch and bending it to the left but I don't want to damage anything. This can't be normal. Any advise would be appreciated.

Sounds to me that one or both sticks are bent.

They're both straight.

Could they be twisted at all?

I looked at them back in the summer with the cover off. I thought I would find a lock nut at the base of the shifters like my Chevy has but there is not one. The main shifter does have a bend down low that bends it towards the dash. The 4X4 shifter is straight. I thought about putting a pair of vise grips on it down low and making it turn but then again I don't want to damage the transmission.

It's been doing it every since I bout it about a year ago.
I bout it from an 86 year old man and he said he never noticed it. He also thought the truck was an 68 model so i guess I believe him.

How do I get the shifter out. I'll look into that.

***I cant remember to be honest, but now I'm thinking it might be the t-case shifter that needs to be rotated 180 degrees.

anyway, its easy. Remove all the trim and stiff, and the shift knobs and eventually you'll come to rubber shift boots with a bracket screwed into the floor with about 6 screws or so.

unscrew them, lift off the shift boots, and another rubber gasket boot thing underneath and you'll then see the ground and the transmission.

4 bolts hold each stick in.

Red face

It is the T-case shifter it is easy to get it in backwards .

remove the trim pieces the rubber boots etc pull the knobs take this all out of the way.

remove the 4 bolts and lift the t-case shifter out rotate it 180 degrees reinstall. Clean all the dirt away before pulling it out no need to add any dirt and grit to the transfer case oil.

make sure it all is correct before putting it all back together.

I had the same problem, it was the shift lever ball seat and end cap were toast. the shifter had too much slop so when I'd throw from 1-2 in 4 low it would bang the t-case into N. Changed in the parts and it tightened up the shifter. Problem solved and the shifter feels MUCH nicer. Marlin sells nice replacement ones.
