86 turbo has a wweird noise...

i have an automati turbo 4runner and it is making like a grrr vibrating noise when it shifts from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. it only makes the noise when the ect is on power mode. no matter if the 4runner is being pushed or not. i think the noise comes from the top right part of the engine. and again it only does it under load. anybody has any idea what it could be. any help is useful, since i can't find many people that are familiar with the 22rte

thats a tough one to figure out. The fact that it only happens when ECU is on power mode and the fact that it happens when shifting leads me to believe its something to do with the transmission. The sound you describe sounds like something internal to me, but I'm no auto tranny expert.

that is a good posibility but the noise comes from the front part of the car, not from the tranny. and i think if it good be the tranny, it would have some sort of vibration or slipping
