84 yota dual t case options
Hello everyone, I am getting ready to swap in dual t cases in my 84 pick up I have been ordering parts so i can do the build myself. My t cases are both non top shifting t cases with stock gear ratio. so far i have ordered the 21 spline trail gear adapter kit, cross member, mounts, and a top loading twin stick conversion kit. My question is do i have to do the 4.7 gear set in one of the cases to have the twin stick option or can i keep the stock gears in both t cases and still utilize the twin stick conversion? I hope you can help

as far as i understand the twin stick only allows you shift in and out of low and high range without shifting into 4wd. ultimately giving you a 2wd low option, or in your dual case set up 2wd low as well as 2wd low low. the 4.70 gear is about twice as low as the stock 2.28 gear and its use in one of cases of a dual set would give you a 3rd low option

You do not have to have 4.7's to run a twin stick. Twin stick works with either gear ratio set.
Normally you have two shift rails in a single case. One for Hi and Low and the other for 2WD or 4WD. There is an interlock pin in between the two shift rails to keep you from going into low range in 2WD and allows the use of the stock single shift lever in the J pattern.
To use twin stick you take the interlock pin out and there will be one shift lever for each shift rail. In a dual case situation, it will be in the rear case. The front case is just a crawl box with Hi and Low range and only needs one shift lever.
If you do decide to run some 4.7's they go in the rear case. They will physically fit in the front. There are plenty of threads explaining why they go in the rear.
Hope that answers your question.

Sorry if I'm hi jacking the thread, but I don't wanna start a new one on account this may be a silly question. Is there any way I can throw my stock 2.28 gears in high range if I go to a 4.70 for low? I can't remember ever needing the high range in my ten years owning my pickup, so that isn't any issue. And again sorry for snagging the thread to ask what might be a silly question. Thanks
