84 22r to 87 22re

I have a donor 87 four runner with a 22re in it. I just need to know if i can convert my 84 22r into an re. Will i need the head from the 87? I've searched a ton i just can't find much on the 84 re conversions. Thanks toytech's!

I am pretty sure the 84 and earlier blocks use domed pistons that will hit the head on an EFI..could be wrong but there are several threads on this....one guy was even going so far as shaving early pistons to make it work...don't think it will
why not swap the entire engine? gonna need the wiring harness, fuel tank, ECU etc anyway

The 87 head won't go on your motor nor will the efi manifold match your 84 head.

Why not put the 87 motor in your truck.

You are correct the pistons have a large ridge near the perimeter, where as the newer ones are flat with small relief marks to clear the valves
