4Runner Knock

Hey guys, gals, boys, and girls, First time poster, first time Toyota owner. Have been mostly in the Volkswagen scene. My first car was a 72 Super Beetle, rebuilt the motor, did some minor work to her, then a tree decided to fall on her, currently rebuilding.

I just got home from 6 months working about 300 miles away from me. When I got home, there was a 92 4Runner sitting for sale down at one of the local garages. I decided to pick it up. I took it for a drive to day to see my mum and it started to get a faint rod knock. Is this a common problem with the V6 3.0L?

I would like to keep this truck, but I do believe I am going to need a new motor. How much does a 3.0 V6 go for?

tick tick tick + 3vze price + VW

tick tick tick...Mine started doing that at 140,000 miles. It now has 258,000. It is a common problem. I'm going to worry about it only when it finally blows up. Been waiting 7 years for that so far.

Average price for a 3vze used is around 750-1000. I'll probably swap in something else.

My first car was a free 1971 Beetle. My Dad and I put a new(er) front beam on it. Got the beam from a guy who was into building those VW trikes and had several leftover shells laying around his yard. He started up the Ford 8N tractor, wrapped a chain around a front beam and yanked it right out from under the shell. I got the beam, the bolts and a little bit of the chassis for a 6 pack. I rebuilt the engine, painted the car after fixing the holes, and had many great 16 y.o. adventures. I had a gas heater so it wasn't TOO cold, but the 4runner is a lot more comfortable.

Sure it's a rod knock and not valvetrain?

Honestly, I know right about nothing about these trucks. What would a valvetrain knock sound like, and how can I differentiate?

I never had a gas heater in my Super, but it made it to school in the winter awesome. The heater would start just about the time I get about a mile from school.

My 90 V6 4Runner knocked pretty bad, running high octane gasoline should help, however I got the timing adjusted because I guess the belt had streched and it never did it again, ran great even when I sold it with 240k.

I might try running high octane gas through her. Not sure if that will do anything or not. I am going to get my winter tires on tomorrow, mechanic is a friend of mine and has had a few Toyota's. I'll ask him about the timing, and about the gas. My brother had said something about using a 20w-50 in her. Good idea or no?

dunno where your at, but this time of year ive heard 20w might be too thick for as cold as it gets, maybe too much for your oil pump in colder temps..i might be wrong but thats what ive heard.
