The only thing I have done to get better MPG's is to change the Plugs and wires. It had 104K for miles on it and it was supose to have had all that done, of course they didn't do the plugs or wires they were still orgionals. So I am in process of getting around to all filters and such .... I don't go slow enough to get MPG's like you do..... TJ

Noob here, first Yota ever. I normally wheel full-sizes with a '79 Bronco with 1 Ton running gear spinning 38's (For now...I planned on going bigger, but local trail restrictions may reduce my tire size to 35 or smaller).

Of the 4 cars sitting in my driveway, the 1988 4runner gets the best mileage. But I do have a problem. We bought this thing last week, thinking that the gas gauge worked fine. But we then noticed that when the gauge came off full, it dropped damn fast. With the needle buried, and praying all the way to the gas station, we were only able to put in 6.3 gallons...

Needless to say, I NEED to put in a new sending unit. So, I have 2 questions:

1. I know I have to pull the tank to replace sending unit, but would like to know from someone who's done it....How hard is it to do, and can 1 person pull an empty 4runner tank.

2. I read above that the fuel tank is rated at 18 gallons, but don't know if that changes year to year. Does a 1988 4runner with 4cyl. also have an 18 gallon tank.?

Thanks in advance folks...great forum, and since I want to do lots with this runner (more resto than anything else), you'll probably see me around a bit. Roger.

What gears do you have? Since it sounds like 95% of your driving is on the freeway maybe putting in some taller gears would help and maybe and exhaust. instead of the engine sitting nicely at 3100 at 70 it would sit at 3100 at 80. just a thought

The 4runners came with 2 different sized gas tanks depending on the tire size.
2nd gens came with either a 17.3 or a 18.8gal tank. Late 1st gens were probably the same. Not sure about 3rd gens.

According to my owners manual, and the Toyota factory service manual, 3rd gen 4Runners have an 18.5 gal. gas tank.
