305 swap 2nd gen

Hey all, this is my first post, and I'm sure it has been asked (sort of), but my buddy has an 80s Chevy Scottsdale with a 305 that he is pulling for a 350, and will let me get for the core charge on the motors. Question is, I don't do much off-road stuff yet with it because of the stock 3.Slow and other motor issues it has, but is there anything detrimental that needs to be changed (i.e. Trans, transfer case, etc.) or will I be okay running stock stuff, other than adapters, or do I need other things changed? Also, where is it that most guys buy their stuff? Thanks in advanced all!

Might want to consider RF1 t-case. Gear driven vrs the chain on V6 t-case. Just depends on cash reserves. Advance adapters should have SBC to R150 tranny. Their site can be difficult to search so don't hesitate to call or email.

Cook thanks! I've been searching them and northwest offroad as well and have made some progress, the only "issue" I'm finding is the wiring issue for gauges and all, but I slightly knew of the t case issue. How detrimental is it to change when the motor does put out 200ish hp, but obviously more torque, and im really only driving it to and from work at the moment?

NWOR has an good/bad reputation. Joke was even:
No
Warranty
Or
Returns

i don't have any experience with them. At the time when I started with stock platform, I wanted a different built direction than most of what they sold at time. other vendors:
marlin crawler
allpro Offroad
trailgear
low range Offroad
Zuk offroad
trail tough
sky offroad

Just swap engine and build as you grow in the community. Figure cost of 305 aka "gutless wonder" to swapping in a 3.4. Compare weights to power output.

I understand that, however we are talking $100 for a perfectly running motor, comapred to my leaking, tired 3.0 with zero balls. Plus with the swap conversion parts im looking at being setup for a 350 later down the road. The only thing i need to look at buying is the carb and manifold as far as the motor itself is concerned unless the 3.4 swap make a whole lot more sense cost effective wise.

Do some more research. No motor swap is $350. When building a rig best to do tons of research before jumping in. Things are costly as is and more so to do them 2nd time around. The 305 may be the best option but it may not... Especially if you can find a truck that's been wrecked.

Very true. Again, the only reason I'd be getting the motor is due to the fact that I'm paying the core charge on my co workers motor for $100 and is in perfect running condition. The lower half of the block for the most part is identical to the 350, with heads and bore being the difference. The 3.0 has almost 291k on it and has seen better days. It leaks coolant and oil and has isssues here and there. The 305 I'm thinking is a good start to what is almost nothing now, and going to something. I've driven the truck and it lacks no power in his truck which outweighs my runner by 2000 pounds. Plus in Colorado Springs there are so many hills that the runner struggles hard. I do have an 04 tundra that is no slouch here, but my fiancé and I can't share 1 car all the time. I'm trying to make the runner more reliable for me when the winter hits because she only want to drive the hulk, as we call it lol, when the snow hits

No need explaining why you wanna swap. 305 or 350 is SBC. Being carb'D makes swap much easier. Should be detailed write ups on swap as it was very popular at one time. So comparing swaps, cost and skill level might make life easier.

I'm trying to keep it as inexpensive as possible, first swap, but very familiar around vehicles as thats what my job is

It's not rock science. I think most with the drive and a good brain can figure it out. Summit has adaptor. Don't know about motor mounts. Buddy did a SBC swap in a 1st gen 4rnr that was a sleeper. Used to mud race it. Think the rust belt took its toll on rig.
