Question 3.4L Head gasket replacement (Pics)

So's I finally got the cylinder heads off no thanks to 3 very nasty crossover pipe bolts. This is what I found.

Gasket still in place.

Gasket removed.

Cylinder #1 valves.

I got to get this beast on the road soon. The wife is getting a really good job and we all know what that means! Money for toys!!
Thank you all for your help. If any more photos are necessary just let me know.

EDIT: Just wondering what gasket sets, seal sets etc. am I gonna need to get her back together?

Ryan

Gasket failure

My buddy (Luckily, a seasoned machanic) took a look at it today and said it looked like the gasket was improperly installed. Too much torque on the head bolts. Does this sound correct? However he couldn't really explain all the chalky yellowish crap clogging up the water jackets.
I wont know much else till I get the block cleaned up and search for cracks.

you might want to consider a flush on your cooling system, then run water a few times and get as much crap out of your system then fill it up 50/50 or 60/40 or w/e you do. also dont run green coolant. toyota makes some pink stuff now that lasts a long time(over 100k) or if you want good coolant/antifreeze at a local store get the orange dexcool and mix it with distilled water. oem headgasket ive heard arent good to use again, You should get a MLS (multi layer steel) head gasket which cometic gasket compant offers. . felpro makes good like water pump gaskets, valve cover etc. while your at it make sure you dotn forget to do a timing belt, water pump, thermostat. which i would get that stuff from a car quest if you have one locally or go oem. over tightening head gakets prob meant the last time it was apart it washacked together for like warranty work and they mechanic prob used a 1/2 impact with a torque stick which is pathetic just fast when your paid less for a big job.

*UPDATE* Cleaned the block surfaces and inspected them for cracks and abnormalities. None seen. Still not sure if the surface is warped or not. Wish me luck please!

Right on man. Next on the shopping list, Feeler guage. Hope to be able to afford all the replacement gaskets, seals, sparkies, coil packs etc. in the next few weeks. I'll get some pics posted soon.

Maybe someone used some of that radiator stop leak crap in it at one time. If the water jacket is that clogged I imagine the radiator is trash. In fact, that may be why the HG failed (over heated).

BTW I'm really suprised to see something like this in the newbe section.

Very possible Dale. The same crud was found in the radiator. She was runnin' a little rough then overheated on me going to work one evening. Cylinder #1 misfire.

I figured since I was a newbie it might be a newbie question. Perhaps this thread needs to be moved.
Thanks for the help again guys.
