3.0 swapped out - New issues with cold start and operating temp

Hi guys,

Well finally got my blown 1995 pickup 3.0 swapped out with the 1991 runner 3.0. The new issues I'm having is a cold start and operating temperature problem. At cold start(Like sitting over night or all day at work) it takes 5-6 key turns at 5-6 seconds each for it to start. And when it does it sputters and idles low(200rpm) for about 10 seconds then i tap the gas pedal and it idles fine(800-1000rpm). Then it will run good, good idle, plenty of power, no hesitation for 20-30 miles then it will start to hesitate and sputter. If I come to a stop it dies. I'll have to start and keep on the gas for it to stay on but its sputtering and rpms go up an down even when i have the pedal in the same spot. I've researched several issues here on the site ranging from ECT senor, cold start injector, timer, TPS. Just wondering what you guys think I should start with.

I do have a check engine light and I read that I can get the code if I jump E1 and TE1 in the diagnostics port and count the check engine light flashes. Is this correct?

The donor 4runner did have the operating temp idle/sputter issue before the swap but it started right up on cold start.

Thanks for any help.

Dom

Ok so I jumped te1 & e1 and got the following codes. 22 and 32

22 - engine coolant temperature sensor. So I will be replacing this tomorrow.

32 - air flow meter signal. Not sure what to check here any suggestions. Can you clean those? Could it be loose connection?

So no more codes!!! Swapped out the ECT sensor and pulled the EFI fuse and woala....no more codes. Truck starts right up now on a cold start. I'm still having the idle/rpm issue once the truck gets hot. It almost seems like its running rich when it does it. If I look at the exhaust while I give it gas to keep it on I can occasionally see puffs of black smoke coming out. Not sure what is causing this, possibly vacuum leak or something.
