22re replacment motor

hello everyone, sort of new to this site , some back ground I have a 86 4runner 22re, has some issues, needs new timing belt possible head gasket, but before I attempt to do this I was wondering about a putting a different engine in, I noticed in my fsm there was a 6 cyl also made that year a 3.4l I guess. does any one know any thing about these engines, are they still available ,can you get parts etc.

3.4L wasn't available until the Tacoma came out in '95 I believe. The 6 cylinder you are thinking of is the 3.0. Either is going to be a big job to swap in place of a 22RE.

thanks for you're reply, so i guess it would be easier to just rebuild the 22re motor? so now the process of determing of what shape the motor is in and to start the rebuild . In reading some of the threads sometimes you don't always have to rebuild the complete motor, so some advice through this process would be help full.

lets see, first its got almost 200,000, the timing chain is making that slapping nose that I hear about so much, its developed some heating issues, it got hot about a year ago,and its not everyday that its gets hot it runs great and then out of the blue it gets very warm. there is some loss of power, I Just replaced the fuel injectors and it runs much better.there is some blue smoke coming out of the tail pipe, it seems like the timing changes sometimes.
