I have a 93 pickup with the 22re and have replaced the cap and rotor, fuel filter, plugs and have cleaned the throttle body. At idle it runs good if I rev it up and hold it at 2000 rpms it will sputter a little bit. If I drive it up to highway speed it will lose power about mid throttle then around 3000rpm it will cut loose and have the power it should, acutally throws you back a little bit. I have read that others have had this problem but have not found a solution yet. I noticed that when I replaced the plugs they were still white but worn so I belive it is running lean. I would appreciate if anyone has any ideas, Thanks.

My 88 is having the same problem. I should say WAS a few days ago. now it barely idles. i just replaced the tps and it didn't change a thing.

 

oxygen sensor, maf, tps...thats almost exactly what mine was doing when the 02 when out, pull the codes and see what your truck thinks is wrong!

 

I pulled the code before i replaced the tps and it was code 51. Now that i replaced it there is no code.

 

Im bettin that its my 02 sensor but could be my tps i disconnect the tps and it runs absoutely perfect

 

The o2 sensor doesn't start working until the engine is warm though.

 

The TPS is an annoying bugger to get properly adjusted.

 

Yea i tried to start my other truck with a v6 with the tps unplugged and it ran great. drove it around the block and everything. That makes me think my problem isn't the tps at all.

 

Replaced my 02 sensor seemed to run perfect turned truck off then came back later ran crappy again. So now sometimes it runs perfect other times it runs terrible. I can't think of what else to do other than the tps but it seems unusual for a tps to be that sporadic. Any Ideas?

 

Ive given up tryin to figure it out for myself i brought it to a couple of my mechanic buddies and they dont know what it is im gonna bring it to another guy who is supposed to be good with these 22res but i put a new tps on it and it didnt change a thing ive test multiple things my best guess is a faulty ECU

 

My guess is fuel supply...




Why didnt you check it via FSM? And to my knowledge they have to be adjusted in, not really a bolt-on item...

 

Mine was running like crap and my friend adjusted the timing and now runs perfect.

 

How many miles on the truck?

I'd take the valve cover off and see if you still have any **PLASTIC** guides...

Then, if it needed guides I'd put some modified 20R **STEEL** guides and a Toyota chain right back in it...

They run good... So good, they'll run till they just quit. Unlike a Chevy or Ferd that'll let you know when it's ready for something...

Don't be one of those guys that waits till it quits, then bad mouths a Toyota...

Well after drivin it for a week or so regularly these are the symptoms. When I first begin to run it at Hwy speeds (5 min) it runs perfect then usally ill get like a dead pedal for a minute or two without varying the pedal just out of the blue, after spitting or sputtering for a little bit then i can drive as long as i want with out a problem (most ive gone has been about an hour at 60 miles per hour) if i turn the truck off for 5 mins, usally stopping at a gas station, and start up again and drive it will miss and have no power for about 30 seconds then will run perfect again without any problems untill the next time i turn it off This happens consistantly. I had a problem with a lack of power at first and was getting 15 mpg then i changed the 02 sensor and it started doing this, but im gettin 18 mpg now and 90% of the time it runs good but when it runs bad its almost in-operatable. Ive gotten many different codes the most recent was the coolant temp sensor, but also have had air temp sensor and IGF codes. The truck has 155000 on it and doesnt burn any oil.

 

Does anyone have any ideas what could cause the truck to run different after shutting it down for a minute then starting it back up, but then goes away after a minute of driving.

Plugs running lean. So go to the fuel side for the solution. Do the basic stuff. Is there gas smell, visible leaks around injectors, pinched/rusted wire on the fuel pump, fuel pump, cold start injector gone bad, rusted out feed, return, vent, filler lines. Put some fuel injector cleaner in it see what happens.

Other then that I'd check to make sure all your primary grounds are good and the alternator is putting out proper voltage.

 

well my truck does something similar to yours did. id sputter around 2000 to 3000 then power all the sudden, but mostly sputter while getting up to speed. still havent figured it out but i think its my o2. anyways it sounds like your o2 fixed most of it but, this whole thing where it runs fine then randomly super bad sounds like wiring? like a short or a bad conection. i would check all you grounds and your fuel pump wiring? all i can think of lol
