22R exhaust headers, collector and pipe
I'm aiming to improve torque and power for my 1991 2WD, cab chassis HiLux.
I'm after some opinions regarding an upgrade for my stock 22R exhaust system.
I will be installing aftermarket headers (extractors), new exhaust piping and some form of sound suppression.
Previous experience, knowledge and findings regarding 22R header design, collector length and exhaust pipe size would be much appreciated. Also, is it worth implementing a venturi reduction into the collector for improved exhaust scavenging? Lastly, what sound supression would be appropriate (e.g hot dog, high flow muffler)? I don't mind a bit of a note!

You will gain most of your exhaust based torque by running 2 1/4" pipes from the cat back. Maybe a flowmaster 40 series muffler. But the principle is more air in more air through the motor and more air out. These little motors require a little bit of back pressure. So if your main goal is torque I would look at a newer cam. Like a RV style cam. That will give your more torque for the money than just about any other mod if you can do the work yourself. If not the might get mor expensive. Others will chime in welcome to yotatech.

These engines don`t expect much return in gain for the money you spend.Like was said with this engine power comes from the head more air in more power to the wheels not much but a little gain.
Port and polish the head, a Cam, over size valves ,
Do you need to run a catalytic converter??
2 1/4" exhaust bigger does not really give you anymore gain.

I'm not currently running any catts, the vehicle was like this when I bought it.
I may look into head work, including upgraded cams in the future. It's only a 1.5 tonne ute so any slight power improvement will be a positive!

on the exhaust,
i just recently bought an 89 4wd hilux and on the way home the downpipe snapped right next to the header and it broke a stud off the header....so now its loud as a dragster.....lol i live in california so i have to meet strickt emission laws....i cant sceem to find a header thats 50 state smog legal except the lc engeneering and doug thorley headers that are way expensive 500+ i was looking for a cheaper alternative so i dont have to get it smogged under the table

Headers get you good sound but I didn't notice any real difference. They stock Toyota collection tubes are actually pretty good and dealing with the California emissions gastapo I would probably stick with stock. Maybe put a better cat and muffler on it. These are back pressure sensitive motors. So if we open the exhaust up to much they actually loose power. If you have the $$$ LC is a good company. I just can't afford to buy from them. thank you for the reply fish guy....i dont really have the money for the lc engennering header either im trying to track down a oem header that isnt rusted to ˟˟˟˟....my truck only had the header,downpipe,2 o2 sensors,the cat and a lil stub after that it has no muffler whatsoever

I may go with some appropriate headers (4 into 1) with a slip on collector that flows into a 2.25 inch exhaust with a high flow muffler or glass pack to retain back pressure.
I dont need any cats or O2 sensors to meet pollution regulation here in Tasmania, so I suppose that's a bonus!
I just got my ute back from the carby specialist today. It runs perfectly on a cold start and idles like a rolex when warm. I'm hoping the new exhaust only improves my gains.

on my truck someone stole my CAT and was kind enough to take a good section of the pipes with it too - so I had a new, larger 2" tube and 2" free-flow CAT welded up close to the Y on the downpipe, followed it from there back with 2.25" like everyone else upgrades to. muffler is also free-flowing round can you can see through. since you can basically toss a golf ball straight through the new exhaust, the stock header is where i'm still retaining some back pressure to keep things happy. to me i think i can feel a slight upgrade, but not much. to truly gain from your $ invested in power additions - you kinda need to just swap the engine for something else IMO.
stock exhaust manifolds will be the cheapest route for your header, then follow with whatever setup you like, even if you want a stock system like a bosal. you can find used manifolds basically everywhere since toyota pickups are everywhere. it will be smog legal too if you're concerned.
89yotain -- for CA emissions legal headers, you need to make sure your aftermarket header has the CARB badge on it. I think your only current choices are stock (4-2-1), LCE (4-1), Doug Throley (4-2-1), TG Rock Ripper (4-1), and PaceSetter (4-1).
