ok we've searched and tinkered and searched and tinkered... now were stumped. We own a 1984 pickup with the 22r. the problem is this... it will start and idle quite well... but as soon as it gets any sort of warmth to the motor it dies. it will start back up and run as long as you have your foot on the gas. but as soon as you take your foot of the throttle it chugs and dies. so far we've replaced the intake manifold, carb (replaced with stock aisin), and the fuel pump with no real effect. we've adjusted the carb to run lean... and adjusted it to run rich. ive tried messing with the distributor. we've changed sparks, wires, and fuel filter.... still nothing. So my question to you is.... WHATS WRONG WITH THE YOTA? any advice is awesome at this point. Were moving back to utah from new york in a month and need this thing to do it. thank you!

 

Replaced all your vaccuum lines?

 

all that were damaged.

 

I just rebuilt my 22 RE and had the same thing. When it would reach the temperature for the thermostat to open (warmed up) it would cough sputter and quit. I found a water line going into a vaccuum port, which I realize was MY fault, but when I got the lines straightened out, it ran great.
I think you should consider the possibility of water getting into your intake somehow. Maybe head gasket? I don't know, just trying to throw out ideas.

 

Not sure he'd run into that with the 22R, but that's a real good thought. How about the choke? Maybe your idle speed is set so low, that once it drops down from fast (cold) idle, it's stalling since it's set too low. Where in NY to where in UT? I've lived both places.

Doesn't seem like a timing issue, but...worth checking.

 

Sandy. We've tried adjusting the idle but no real difference. If it helps at all the problem showed up while downshifting. We considered a warpped manifold because we sprayed starting fluid by the gasket and it revved high. After changing it out it fixed that problem. But the whole dying issue remains. It will stay running while driving as long as there is back pressure. I'm stumped.

 

A gas line too close to something hot? carb wants gasoline in liquid form. if it gets too warm it'll be partial vapor. Just a thought.

 

Fuel bowl has gas in it. Could it be a bad cat?

 

cats act better the hotter they get , i say double check vac hoses and your choke mechanism good luck

 

Double checked and then checked again on vacuum lines. What about this vacuum switch next to the vsv any way to test these? And what do they do?

 

My buddy jonnyboy on here just bought an 83, ran like crap, dying, sputtering, sometimes a high rev, he pulled the cat off and it runs great. Its a possibility. Take it out of the equasion and see what happens.

I dunno. Hard to say over here if you've missed something in the things you've already gone over. How's your coil? No cracks or anything?

 

Checked gas for water nothing. Oil was fine too. Checked the vacuum switch and it seems like its shot. Looking for one is a pain. No Toyota dealership has one from Boston to la. any good websites for replacement parts? Help!

 

remove your breather and look into the carb and see if when you pump the trottle cable you can see fuel squirt in the carb. Good luck

 

Checked compression... Nada... It keeps coming back to this vacuum switch. I pulled the switch and plugged the line to it. The truck ran the same. The switch leads to the fuel cut off selenoid... Anyone dealt with this?
