2001 Toyota 4Runner Charcial Canister - Used Part Help

Hi Guys:

I recently got the CE / VSC Trax / VSC Off idiot lights on my 2001 Toyota 4Runner Ltd (3.4 V6).... I ran the OBD II codes and sure enough the codes came up P0440 / P0441 / P0446. The Evaporitive Emmissions (Early Intrusive System) codes....

I did a little research and found that the five primary culprits are:

1. Either a bad or unsecured gas cap.
2. A disconnected canister vent line from the air filter.
3. Stuck or Bad VSV's.
4. Bad Charcoal Canister.
5. Hole somewhere in the line.

I did the whole process of elimination remedy and:

1. Bought a new gas cap.
2. Checked the vent line... it was fine.
3. Couldn't test since I don't have the electrical equipment.
4. Couldn't check... don't know how.
5. Sprayed soapy water to see if I could see any leaks along the line... didn't see any... didn't smell a fuel leak at all.

I went on Car-Parts.com under fuel tanks to see who had a used canister in my area due to the fact that if it is the canister I could get it for $50-$100 instead of the dealer cost of $450 (the after market I found was actually more expensive).

On Car-Parts.com it has the fuel tanks grouped together for 2001 and 2002 4runners. I've heard conflicting stories on whether or not the charcoal canister even exists on the 2002 4runners and whether or not if it does exist if it is the same part.

Finally... here's the question... Where can I find a complete listing on parts compatibility between different models? Is there any go to source where I can get a definitive answer?

Second question... does anyone know where I can download a repair manual / diagrams for my 2001 Toyota 4Runner?

Easy enough to check the VSVs, you can see if the lines are unblocked by simply bypassing the VSV, that is hook the outlet line (that runs to whatever the VSV controls) to the vacuum port that the VSV inlet connects to. Other way to test it to apply 12 volts (and ground) to the two VSV wires and listen for a click and also see if they pass vacuum when energized (either with the engine running or try sucking or blowing through the VSV lines.

The FSM will have cannister testing and cleaning procedures. Should be able to find a 1996-2002 FSM on-line, may not be the exact year as you have but should be close enough. Generally need a hand vacuum pump to test them and a compressed air source to clean them.

My 2001 is also throwing out a P0440 code. Gas cap replaced but I really dont want to mess with troubleshooting. Does anyone know how to bypass the system so the CEL doesn't come on and I can pass emissions? I know that sometimes resistors can be put in place of a sensor to trick the ecu. I would like to do something like this so I never have to worry about the evap system again.
