ive not taken the top off of my 87 4runner. i got it a little over a month ago, and i was wondering where can i find a new gasket to put in if the one for the top is dry rotted when i take it off?

Bump as well. Plan on removing mine for the first time (been 21 years) this summer. I'll need it to go back on later! LOL.

I've had mine off a couple times and even sported the Kayline before going back to hard top mode. I get leaks once in a while so I'm planning on pulling it and chasing the 14 threads for the bolts and resealing at the end of summer.

I had used some over the counter stick on weather strip from the auto parts store, which SUCKED.

Would love to know where you got these prices/part numbers please?

There is a site with part numbers

They had great schematics just like at Toyota and the part numbers to go along. They apparently ran afoul of Toyota and had to take down the pics, but the part #s are all still there if you know what you're looking for.

Secondly there is a site that still has pics

They appear to be a Toyota parts seller so it would seem they will be able to keep the pics up. Their pics are a PITA to navigate compared to what toyodiy had but beggars can't be choosers I suppose. Also, they seem to try to semi-hide the part number. Usually the first 2 digits are just asterisks but other times the number is different enough that you can't find it. So you end up doing a dance that goes something like this:

Find the pic with the part
Scroll down to the part number
Assume the first 2 digits are the same as in the pic
Go to 1sttoyotaparts or Toyotapartssales or your favorite Toy seller
Input the part number and get your listing
OR
Get a "no part found" message
Go to Toyodiy with the proper section knowledge and find the "right" part #

Oh well, it gets you there.

Probably not yet. Truck still has to live outside the garage too much.

 

if your talking about the weather stripping that goes around the top where the shell connects to the cab, i got mine from toyota, even had the oem yota glue to hold it in place, i can look at the part number off of my invoice and get you all a price if you would like? let me know

no trouble at all, i need to go through the reminder of how much money i spent at the stealership and find it, but give me a lil bit and i will get that info for ya!

 

also. how heavy are the tops? its obviously going to take atleast two people to get it off.

 

According to 4Crawler.com the top weights about 200lbs.

I do it by myself, but it is not easy. I am about 5'7 and have about 2" of lift on my truck and I struggle to take it off by myself but I get it. It can be quite a balancing act to get it to not fall off the sides or off the back while trying to get it. That is one of the reasons I don't put it on and off all the time, its just too much of a PITA.

 

alright guys, sorry for the delay, got home and found my computer is down in the dumps so i was unable to log on last night, but here is what i got from the dealer on this weather strip:

65888-89102- weather strip for the cab/canopy $18.05

this is info is right off the dealership reciept, seems like its pretty fair price from the dealer.

 

Thanks OrRunner - was that figure for all three pieces (2 sides and top)? That's pretty reasonable....came with the glue too right?

cztheman64 - I've taken the top off by myself twice, but that was before I lifted it 4"....got on my back and pushed up with my feet to get it off the alignment posts, then gradually slid/wiggled it backward off the back....I wouldn't do it again, especially with a lift. If you have a garage, maybe use some ropes to secure it while you lift it off?

Thats kind of how I do it, I stand on the rear bumper and lift it off the allignment tabs then slowly slide it back until the front of the roof is close to the rear of the bed. Then I set the rear of the roof on the ground, get inside the roof and "walk" it back on away from the truck until I can set it down on the ground.

thats just for the top piece, my side weatherstrips were in great shape for some reason, almost like they were replaced before.

Yes it actually already has the glue installed and you just peel of the "protective" layer before install
