1987 4runner spark problems
#1
Howdy all. I recently (about 2 months ago) bought a 1987 4runner, with the 22-re engine for $500. It ran to make it home, but once it got home, it wouldn't start again. I had time to throw a cap and rotor onto it (The bug had came loose and worn the points inside pretty bad, I'm really not sure how ti got home) and it still wouldn't start. Next I threw a fuel filter on it, (WHO THE HELL DECIDED TO PUT IT THERE!?!?) For the time between then and now I've not had time to much as even look at it (or the money for parts) but I've got a bit of time now. I just threw a set of wires, plugs and a new coil on it a few minutes ago, and still the same thing. I'm assuming its the ignition pack on top of the coil now. Does this seem right? And can anyone point me in the direction of one? I cannot seem to find them at either Autozone or O'Rileys, and lord knows there are none in junkyards around here (As soon as they hit the yard...its like piranhas and a cow.)
Would you agree its probably the Ignition Module on top of the coil? Something makes me think one of those is not going to be cheap...
Another strange thing is I could at one point have a buddy turn it over, and spraying starter fluid and playing with the throttle I could get it to fire off for a second or two...which is what lead me to the idea of a fuel filter. Wonder if I'm still not getting any fuel?
Any ideas anyone? I'm open to any advice, as I really like this truck, but it would be a lot more fun to drive it as opposed to just sit in my backyard and drink beer in it.

Are you getting a CEL? Did you check the fuel lines to see if maybe 1 is pinched? And have you checked to see if your fuel pump is working? And your getting good spark, right?

Pull off a fuel line and crank it. Make sure you're getting fuel.
Are you getting spark at the plugs? Pull off a plug wire and stick a screw driver in there, get a buddy to crank it over. If you get a shock you have spark.
When the key is at "run" do you have a CEL on?
As for parts, I would get used toyota parts. There are several members on here who can get you parts for pretty darn cheap. Dirtoyboy is one...

No check engine light, as well as no spark. Just went down there to make sure, and low and behold there is no spark coming from the coil (stuck a screwdriver in the wire coming off the coil and watched to see if it jumped to ground). The other thing is I can't smell fuel when cranking over for a while, but I thought I read somewhere that the fuel pump was disabled until the air flow sensor sensed enough airflow?
The most annoying thing is we got it home just fine..grr.

I've been working on this stupid thing when find time to. I was not getting power to the ignitor, and found when I jumped it out (powered it straight from the battery) I had spark - I could get the truck to run over/run on starting fluid. I am beginning to think the no spark / no fuel is related (They are both powered off of the ignition switch, correct?) Is there something I'm missing here? I'm close to jumping out the power supply for the ignitor and for the fuel pump and seeing if I can just get the damned thing to run.
