'05 4Runner gas tank size

I'm a newb, and this entire confab is quite overwhelming, so I hope I'm posting this in the right place. I just bought my first Toyota, an '05 4Runner SR5 2WD, and I have a question about fuel capacity/tank size. Specs list it as a 23 gallon tank. I took it off the lot with a full tank, or at least the needle was a shade past F, where it stayed for about 70 - 80 miles so I have no reason to believe it wasn't topped.

Today when I got down to the end of the tank and the range indicated I had five miles left, the fuel light was on, and the needle was on E, I decided to fill up. When it topped off, I was at 20.5 gallons. I guess my question is does the range indicate five miles to empty, or five miles to "time to fill up", or is the tank only 20/5 gallons?

Thx!

Ben

That would be about right. the range indicator and fuel lights are conservative. plus you can never really use 100% of a tank capacity, unless the bottom is sloped and you're drawing off the bottom in the middle.

Thanks - I have since filled it up twice. The second time, I chickened out and filled up when the range was at about three or four and got the same results, 20.5 gallons. Yesterday I got a little bold and went for about 10 - 15 miles past zero range and got 21.2 gallons. So there's obviously some play there...

4th Gen 4Runner has 87L tank. When I refuel mine I can get up to 92-94L filling up to the neck so I can see the fuel in the refueling tube.
