1979-1983 pickup a/c stuff
Looking to add AC to my 83. Mainly need all the interior parts: evap box & duct to heater, ac amplifier, any wiring. Thx

I'm not saying it can't be done but you need another truck wiring is integrated into the harness and if your truck didn't come with ac it won't have the plugs and does not have holes in fire wall for evap hoses to be ran through I just got done doing this it a real PITA

I probably have most/all parts you need, they would be from an 86 or 87 pickup. Not sure if I have a spare dash harness, if you need the whole thing. I don't know the pre 85 trucks very well, so not sure how well things interchange.
Off the top of my head, the related items would be
Heater control face plate (if you need it, it's the 86 style)
AC button
Evap + housing/duct
ac amplifier (i'll have to figure out where they mount, generally I leave as much as i can on the harnesses when I pull them)
You need any of the tubing for the condenser to ac pump?
Basically all of the pickups I've had, had AC, so the differences are not coming to mind very well, plus it's pretty late lol.

Forgot I posted this. I found a donor not to far from me so I now have everything with possible exception of a usable evaporator core.
Thx acfixer, but I know the underdash stuff is not the same for the first gen, the evap box is definitely different. My buddy has a 85 4R and I took a good look at everything because I was having such a difficult time finding the 83 evap box. The Underhood stuff may be compatible, I’d be surprised if it weren’t.

Im in the middle of a 3rz swap and adding ac at the same time... so it’s just a small part of my project.

Sounds like a fun project. I should have known the 83 and lower stuff wouldn't be the same, body style was 84-88 for some reason I was thinking 83 was included in that lol. I'd think the under hood, atleast the bolt on engine parts would be the same since the engine hasn't changed a whole lot since then besides the long stroke double roller vs the newer single roller shorter stroke. The 3rz should rip pretty good in the light truck. I never reference the pickups by gen since the "first gen" makes no sense to me, they where made since the 60s, it's like the 4th gen or whatever, just first gen in usa I guess. Here's the wiki on it for reference, kind of neat looking for the older ones.

Since you have a donor truck, would you be able to check the cab to taillight harness for me? I'm working on a reproduction for them in the 86 era, but not sure how far they interchange. I'd need photos of the connectors, and measurements for each split/wire length (I sketched a ruff layout and wrote the measurements down that way). I suspect they are very similar since the 95 pickup I checked was basically the same with a couple connectors different.

I don’t have a donor truck, a guy pulled the ac parts for me out of his (which I referred to as donor). I can take pics of my taillight plugs if that would help you? From what I can tell, all the wires going to the back of the truck are hard wire integrated into the main harness, not connected via a plug (except for at the taillight location)

Under the passenger seat is where it should disconnect from the main harness, that's atleast how 84-95 pickups and 95+ Tacoma's are setup.
Here's a couple of photos , left to right for the 86 connectors. Just a visual check should atleast let me know if it's plausible interchange or not. Probably too hard to check the wire colors/pinout with it installed in the truck.
6 pin - Tail light connector
2 pin - License plate light connector (white) & fuel pump connector (yellow) for EFI trucks
3 pin - Fuel tank connector for fuel level
9 pin - Main harness to tail light harness connector

Interesting, I guess the 6 wire plug is for just the tail lights which would be 6 wires if it has a dedicated bulb for blinker. Wonder how the fuel tank level wiring gets to the main harness. I'll have to get one in my hands to be able to cover that era of pickup it seems. Thanks for the pics, looks likely that my taillight harness will be 84-86, pretty short range .
