? for you guys with Tacomas
I currently have a 01 Tundra TRD. I am thinking of trading this for a 05 or newer Tacoma. What do you get for MPG with the 4.0 and 2.7??
What do you guys think of the 2.7? before the Tundra I had a 96 Tacoma 2.7 and it had no power! I have heard that the newer ones are better?
I am thinking of a extra cab 4X4, can you fit a car seat back there?
Thanks

I have the V6 in a doublecab tacoma 2008, stock. I haven't been below 20MPG yet. Best was 23MPG. I think I'll get better this summer as the truck has 6 thousand miles on it. I don't drive very fast either.

I have a 2003 4x4 Reg. cab Taco w/ the 2.7 and auto trans. It has 40K and is driven 98% on the interstate (very flat here in middle of Indiana). I drive 65Mi per day with the cruse control on as much as I can at 55MPH. Last week I managed 23MPG on 87 octane. The plugs have never been changed, I added a regular K&N air filter and aired all 4 tires to 35psi.
Its power is acceptical. I can pull a ProCraft 165 bass boat around the hilly Southern part of Indiana with the bed loaded with camping gear, 1 passenger and with the AC on. It does OK at best. When pulling a boat expect MPG to be in the low teens and to get passed by mopeds on the up hill climbs.
If I had to do it again I would opt for an extended cab and a V6. But I can't and its paid for so I will try getting an electric fan and a header to see if I can get some more power out of it.

Thats the thing my truck is paid for and only has 80k miles. If I went to a new tacoma I would have a payment again. I have a 20' Lund Alaskan that I tow. I think the 4.0 would do fine, but is the milage gain worth the price?

I would have to say if I were you I'd stick with the Tundra. The gas MPG improvement would be tiny, if at all. My Father In law had V-8 03 Tundra that got better MPG pulling much heaver loads than my Tacoma. The smaller engine has to work a heck of a lot harder to pull the same weight, plus my Tacoma's has 4:10 gears to get the torque.
Plus the Tundra hads more room. Putting a car seat in the Tacoma makes it very crampt. I bought it when I was single and only had a dog, now married with 1 kid, it does not get used for family outtings.

Right after I bought mine, I took a 380 mile round trip here in Florida, and got right at 21 MPG. That was mostly interstate.
Last December, I went from Florida to Kentucky and back with my ATV in the bed. On the way up and back, I got 17.2 average. Considering that I had my ATV in the bed and wasn't exactly doing the speed limit, I think it did good.
I've got my lift and tires now, so it would be less.

I have an '05 Taco D/C 4.0 V6, TRD off-road. I have a 2in lift, 265/75 Toyo muds. Heavy ARB bumper and a winch. with 3 people inside and a German Shepherd in the back, pulling and 21' sled, I get about 13.5 on the interstate.
Unloaded I get 16 around town and have gotten 24 hwy, but it usually gets around 21.

If it helps at all...I've got a DC Sport with the 4.0L and I get 21-23 on the highway and about 18-19 in the city. Granted, I drive a lot slower than the majority.
This is with only myself (215lbs) and my tool bag (50lbs) in the truck.
Everything is stock...for now.

'06 XRunner (4.0) with 28,000 miles.
Have been getting 13 MPG avg not matter how I drive. Faster speeds see 15 MPG and I am talking 85 mph cruising.
All the rest on Customtacos had great MPG except for one in Cali who has the same issue with me.
Haven't been over at CustomTacos in forever either.
